Why would the starter try to engage during shifts into Overdrive? Here's what happens....I start the engine...I shift the automatic 4L60E from P to R to N with no problems....but when I then select D, the starter pinion begins shearing into the flywheel.....so I continue to shift further into 3rd and it stops. So I basically can only drive in 3,2,1. When I stop to move it back into P...it briefly grinds again as I move all the way over to P.
Basically everything else works fine ....I've checked the wiring harness and the connections to the starter/soleniod, everything looks great...
Has anyone else experienced this before?...It has to be somewhere in the PCM....what was the culprit in your case?

yes, its the starter ....it's engaging the flywheel when I shift to OD.....not sure if its the BCM or PCM, but something is wrong.....wonder if it could be an ignition switch short or something....

An ignition switch short wouldn't cause this to happen EVERY time you put the car into drive. If it only happens when you put it into drive, it has to be something with the shift-kit, tranny, or something directly related. BTW, you don't have a flywheel, you have a flexplate.

I replaced the nuetral safety switch and it's connectors(C-1, C-2) , but that hasn't solved it ....It must be somewhere in the transmission...
No one else has ever had this problem?....

After looking at the wiring diagram for the ignition switch (not talking about the lock assembly/switch)...it looks to me like their is a direct circuit direct to the starter....so my question is why wouldn't a short somewhere in the ignition switch, when shifting between the N and D, cause the starter to think it needs to start?... it seems possible to me....no one else has ever had this issue?....

Thanks to all for the replys, comments, and free consultation. I found the culprit - it was a bent pin inside the top connector of the Park/Nuetral/Safety switch. Basically impossible to see until its removed from the trans. thanks again.
