Like many cars, it is done to prevent freezing in very cold weather, in most cases it is not a concern.

let's see.. -20F, bitter cold with a crazy wind chill... oh yeah... my car started and drove fine... well after I could actually touch the steering wheel. Took a good 20 mins to be bearable but only 10 mins to get a reading on the 98 temp guage. Even then my transmission didn't like shifting at that speed, felt notchy as hell. Not like I race at that temp anyways lol

I doubt there will be any really cold temp where a TB without the bypass will have the blade stick. My car even has the free ram air mod done to it.

Icing of the throttle body plate was a really big problem with the CFI when it was introduced. GM used exhaust manifold heat to prevent it from happening on those, but the TPI cars induction system wouldn't allow that type of setup. GM has been heating most of their throttle bodies with coolant ever since.

Also remember, old school stuff had coolant running threw the intake which helped warm the tb's but the LT1/LS1 based engines did away with the coolant in the intake so the TB needed heat from someplace for cold climates.

It's really unnecessary in most places in the U.S. except maybe Alaska or Minnesota where it gets FREEZING cold. I've ran TB by-passes on all my own personal vehicles since new, and done it on probably 200 cars over the years.

Even if the TB was frozen a tad, letting the engine idle for a minute would take care of it. The heat coming off the engine would melt any ice on the TB in a matter of a few seconds.

I live in Minnesota and have mine bypassed too. But, my $.02 is that someone would have to be a complete dumbass to be driving an F-body in the winter here anyway.

F-body + Minnesota roads in winter = no more F-body
