This same lifter is used in the LS9. GM makes and installs millions of these every year for a long time. The same lifter works in every LS based engine, car and truck built. I would guess a freak failure or debris got stuck in the roller section and caused the damage. How was the pushrod from that lifter?

Freom memory, LS7 lifters use hardened 1010 steel and Morel uses 8240 (at least 8000 series) steel. Big big difference. There is a reason that LS7 lifters are $130 and Morels are $500, the rollers are only one reason and there are many others.

The cams and springs run are not factory by any means and this is the issue. The OEM was lifter was only meant to handle so much...
hi rpms, hi spring pressures not the ideal situation for a stock lifter.

OEM is built with certain conditions in mind. Trex and double springs isn't one of them.

Whats the LS7 cam ? Whats lift and lobes and spring pressures from OEM springs?

According to my builder who takes these engines apart all day long, it happens more than people know about. The wheel is the first thing to go.

Vettenuts is right about it being night and day between a Morel and an LS7.

This is a newb question, but how do you set preload? Use a feeler to check the gap between the rocker and valve?

Is this something you would have to worry about with a less aggressive cam like a TV2 or a TR224?

What about something like the cadillac racing lifters? Thats absiclaly a stock style lifter with a few changes that enable it to take some abuse for a good price from my understanding.

The OP has not answered all Qs

Why only 1 lifter and not others? Could be defect, could be it twisted in the guides (my suspiscion), could be lack of lubrication.
T-Rex has a very small base circle and that makes stock lifter go lower in the lifter bore than normal. The LS7 lifter was not designed for that as its skirt is not that tall. The Morrels on the other hand were designed especially for that.
I bet my sandwich that the OP did not change the plastic lifter holder trays. 30$, that is all but most poeple tend to ignore.

Using a pushrod length checker, and dummy springs is one way to measure pre load

no i did not change the trays, although it doesnt look to have spun in the bore, my guess a long with some others that there seemed to be a oiling issue... ohh well it happens, if it wasnt that it would be something else.. no biggie thanks for all the help you guys
