Default PRC or Edelbrock?

Hello all! I have a 2002 SS M6 and it's time to make some more power. I am looking to do a head/cam swap and am having trouble deciding on what heads to order. Right now, I am looking at either the PRC Stage 1 heads ($1100), or I can get a brand new set of assembled Edelbrock RPM XT heads #61949 for $1500.

I am not wanting to go radical or have a rough idle... I was probably going to add the GM LS6 cam or something very close from Comp. Any help is appreciated! The car is mostly stock other than a 100 wet shot of nitrous that is hardly ever used, and a K&N filter setup (no airbox).

Sure is! Fully assembled, never installed. I'm thinking I should jump on them, but want to make sure they will work well for what I'm wanting.

I noticed the PRC heads (according to manufacturer specs) seems to flow quite a bit better than the Edelbrock, even though it has smaller valves. The Edelbrock has a smaller runner though, which might be better on the street/my application. I hate going back and forth but with both of them within a couple hundred of each other, I want to make sure I get whats best for me.

I would take a look at the PRC 2.5 5.3L heads. They will bump up the compression with the 62cc chambers and only have a 220cc intake runner. They will have great port velocity and the bump in compression will work well with the nitrous. We can set the heads up with a Comp 918 spring to handle the LS6 cam you are looking at or we can spec you a custom grind cam to get you where you are wanting to be with HP and driveability. Feel free to shoot me a PM or give me a call with any questions and we can get you setup with everything you need!

also may want to think about getting a cam other than the LS6 cam, it nearly wouldn't be worth putting one in...get a small 224 cam or similar if nothing else.

That's what I was thinking. I would throw a small cam in there along with the head swap. We can put something like a 224R cam or similar to pick up some extra HP and TQ while keeping the driveability unchanged. Let me know what you are looking to do with the car and we can kick a few options around for you!

Thanks guys. I have a couple weeks left of driving weather here in KC and then I'll start tearing into it. I was a fool and test drove a 2007 Vette, and now need to pump up the SS a bit. ;-)

Having the ls6 cam would be a waste because of the small lift and those new heads wouldn't be used to their full advantage. There are more choices and I say go custom grind. You can go bigger and still be drivable its more about the tune. You may want to go with headers and other boltons before the h/c package as well so it will be free to inhale and exhale and not restricted. Good luck with the car. Did you like the power or the feel of the vetter more because that may be something to ask yourself about things going forward.

the ls6 cam is really mellow. i'm thinking of upgrading to a bigger cam. ls6 specs 550 lift, 218/204 duration, 117 lsa. positives are it idles and runs like stock. my idle is 600/700 rpm. the negatives are no lope sounds and lower dyno numbers than i expected. i have an A4 trans, with your manual trans i'd recommend going at least with a 565 lift 221 dur on a 115 lsa (thats minimum!) i'm considering 565 lift (because i have ls6 springs) 224/ 228 on 115 or 114 lsa. just my 2 cents. call a few vendors, tell them what your goals are, and average out their opinions.
