how often do stock spring retainers break?
how often do stock spring retainers break? a few years ago i had a 95 Z28 with stock internals and 145k on the clock. after a trip to the track and 4 or 5 passes i ended up breaking an intake valve spring retainer on #8. the valve didnt drop, instead the retainer dropped down onto the next coil of the spring so it wasnt closing all the way. luckily there wasnt any damage i just replaced the retainer and was ok.
im looking to do a cam swap soon and would like to take the budget route and reuse my stock retainers. i have 100k on my LS1. could i expect something like this to happen again or was that a one in a million incident with my LT1?

That sounds pretty rare just because the retainer dropped down a coil on the spring and didnt cause any damage. I wouldnt expect to be that lucky next time. But as far as your question goes I can't really help you. You could just buy some new stock ones instead of buying aftermarket which might help your budget and be better insurance
