With respect to ticking sounds, take note of exactly how it sounds like and where you can hear it best. Also, determining the frequency (or speed) of the tick in conjunction with the RPM will reveal if it's coming from a single area or multiple areas in the engine.
Airmaxon1 and LS2 dude, can you identify the nature of your tick in the above two classifications?

I can hear it best on the drivers side if i stick my head way down almost exclusively on that one side, the speed of the ticking increases with rpm and is louder when im driving in the car than standing outside of it.

ive been chasing a tick for the past year it hasnt gotten any louder but it hasnt quieted down any, the way i see it ive changed everything in the top end and new lifters and i still have the ticking and its been almost 10k miles and its still running strong. i figured im tired of changing parts and still get the same results so ill just run it till it goes bang and then buy a new short block.

Hey, i think the last guy that responded has got it. I dealt with a loose #6 plug wire and the arcing sounded exactly like a rocker/lifter issue. i was young then and went headlong into a cam change even though evidence of watching the rockers move off and engine running told me it wasn't a fried camlobe. i thought it had to be because pushrods and rockers all checked good. i thought about it being an ignition tick/tap/knock but never pushed firm on the wires to make sure they were secure. its like checking to see if there's gas in the tank if the car won't start. coulda, shoulda. Anyway secure wires fixed the ticking. good luck.
