Default Emissions Levels following H/C Package

I'm considering a H/C package, tune and ARH LT's with full emissions hook-ups (AIR/EGR/CATS). Is it likely that a car will fail the sniffer test following these mods, despite the retention of emissions equipment? I wouldn't want to invest in these mods, only to fail testing. Sniffers were used here in CO in the past, but have been suspended for the time being.
Thanks..

You should be fine with a tune. Even with a sniffer test you would probably be okay as long as you have the cats.

From what I have read it's the degrees of overlap on the cam that will cause the sniffer test to pass or fail.

I'm planning on getting a streetable cam such as the Lunati Voodoo series like the ones below or possibly a TSP or TR224.

Lunati Voodoo #60510
Duration @ .050 IN/EX: 212/218
Gross Valve Lift IN/EX: .531"/.531"
LSA/ICL: 113/109

or
Lunati Voodoo #60511
Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 222/228
Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .567/.567
LSA/ICL: 113/109

I wouldn't think you'd have a problem with either of those set ups. I gas benched mine just for the hell of it (we don't have IM) and it nearly passed with headers, no egr, no air, with cats... also it was only running on 7 cylinders. If your cats are working well they will clean up any leftovers.

I'm not sure if you'd even want to run egr with a cam. The extra overlap causes a natural egr. You might have too much if your solenoid is dumping more. Like I said, I'm not sure, but something worth looking into.

Interesting point. If EGR is retained, I'll likely disconnect it and tune it out but it will be there if needed for emissions inspections later.

Don't you have obdII plug in testing?

I deleted every header and AIR related code on my car and rolled into the quickie emissions station with a poorly tuned cam, lts and a loudmouth and passed with flying colors. LOL

failed here in Denver with a 224/228 114. But I did have a smashed cat at the time. '99 with all e-stuff still connected, except for the long tubes and catted Y. Not going to try to pass again until spring.

The requirements changed in the last year or so.

HC was 1.2000 --- now --- 1.2000 and I had 1.5253 FAIL
CO was 20.000 --- now --- 15.000 and I had 7.2338 PASS
NOx was 3.000 --- now --- 1.5000 and I had 1.7191 FAIL

I hope that with new plugs and a full working cat the car will pass. If not I will have it retuned one more time and try again. Else??? Wait until I move to Weld county with no emissions to register the car again.

as long as you retain the cats you should be fine, juts make sure they are heated nicely before you do the emission test. good luck

Yea I went up the mountain the night before and hit a small boulder in the road and it smashed the cat. Next morning we had it on the dyno and on the 2nd pull the contents of the cat pushed out the back in a big white plum of smoke. Instant 20rwhp.

The biggest cam I've heard of passing reliably is a 224/224 114 LSA

you should of pulled out a bag and start catching those contents. you can get 100 bucks for each cat. and i hope you did not inhale that crap, i was gutting my friends cat on a charger and after i was done my mask was full of black ****, good thing it was not in my lungs.

Two other cams under consideration are the TR224/TSP224 grinds which would put me right at that upper limit.

If I don't pass I guess I could get a "smog tune" followed by a performance tune after emissions testing.

my FMS 224/228 114 has a -1.7 overlap. No reason why this shouldn't pass with working cats.
