Default Can I build/get a 400+ cube on the cheap?

A buddy of mine just blew his motor and he wants to go north of 400 cubes this go round, at the same time he wants to keep his costs to minimum. I am telling him to go 383 since he has the block and a set of ported 241's. He wants 402-403-408 or something of that nature but everybody wants a good amount for a shortblock. Is there any way of building a 400+ cube motor that can handle some nitrous on the cheap? Give us some ideas to consider.

Not really, Seems like it would be more trouble than its worth. You could re-sleeve the block but that aint cheap.

What do you consider to be cheap and how long do you want it to last on the nitrous?
Cheap and longevity dont mix with nitrous.

You can save a bit of cash by going with an iron short-block. Typically, you'd be looking at a 408ci setup if you went that route for nitrous. It's hard to skimp and save too much on a nitrous build because you want and need good forging pistons and preferably a steel top ring set too.

There are some options and pricing break-down if you want to build new. We have a quite a few 408's in stock and ready to ship currently so wouldn't have to wait too terribly long for one either!

For more money savings, you're right...he could go with a stroker built on his current block and all. He'd be looking at the 383ci shorty. Again, be sure to get the 2618 forging like Wiseco and Diamond offer for durability with the spray for sure! Here's a link with some rotating assembly pricing to give you an idea of what it might cost.

He's not trying to go extra cheap on the build just wants good parts at a reasonable price. In other words he doesn't want to go and get a 408 iron block for 4800 that can handle a 250 shot when a sponsor on here could build him one with better parts that will handle the same shot or bigger for a good bit cheaper. He was looking at the 416 from sdpc2000.com and getting a new set of heads.

Default Update on motor build

My buddy has decided to go 383 since he has the block already. Here is a question for you all: He has MTI (houston) 2e 241 casting heads on the motor now. I know these heads are going to hold back the potential of the motor but how much will they hold it back to say a set of 243's ported? In the future he plans to upgrade to a set of TFS or AFR's. His cam choice is up in the air too. He was thinking MS4 I am telling to take a look at speed inc stroker grinds. None of this is about to happen soon he just wants to get it on paper and look at what its going to cost him. We will start on it in the spring.
