New Quaker State Synthetic Oil
I have seen this stuffed advertised and in the stores and was wondering if anybody is running it yet or has any good/bad info. My car has been sitting for awhile and I'm looking to change over from Mobil 1 and need to decide on a good oil that I don't have to order. Thanks for any help and/or suggestions.

Re: New Quaker State Synthetic Oil
This oil seems to work great. FWIW, I took a 15K mile LS1 apart for a cam change that had only ran Mobile-1 and it had a varnish on the valve covers, etc. pretty bad for a 15K mile engine. We cleaned it up and put everything back together. After that, the motor was changed over to the QS synthetic. When the cam was pulled out at 25K miles, there was no varnish what so ever.

Re: New Quaker State Synthetic Oil
very informative ....
i have a bunch of QS synthetic in my basement that I may not use now...
what other synthetic oil is not labeled petroleom hydrocraked?
...what a rip off!!!!! ...can we call the FTC and complain about this horse poop? ..someone should be jailed!
I have used Syntec synthetic on occasion; is it true synthetic?
Do you work for Mobil Oil?

Nope, I don't work for Mobil, or any oil company. I'm just a crazy person who spends way too much time talking with people about oil. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
Sadly, every common synthetic you'll find in the stores is using a group 3 base oil. Thank Castrol for that, the courts allowed them to start doing this back in 1998, so others followed suit. So Syntec, Quaker State, Pennzoil and all the other name brand synthetics on the shelves of Walmart are not really synthetic. Mobil 1 is the only one left which is a true synthetic that uses a PAO/ester base.
Other than Mobil 1, you'll have to look in speed shops and other specialty stores to find the other true synthetics, such as Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple, Neo.
In Canada we do have a fully synthetic Castrol Syntec that just arrived though. It's the 0w30 that says Made in Germany on the back. But in the US it's not available (at least not yet)

Re: New Quaker State Synthetic Oil
So can anyone tell me where I can find an alternative synthetic oil for sale in the St. Louis area (preferably South)? It is getting hard for me to find Mobil 1 10w-30 that isn't for higher milage engines. Thanks for the info Patman, I don't post a lot but I knew you were an excellent resource. How much is an oil analysis? I know the Syn Quaker State isn't as expensive as Mobil 1 though (I wanna say like a 1.50 difference)

The Mobil 1 that is labelled as high mileage is still safe to use, it's simply a way that they've labelled the new formula to make it easier for people to figure out. So it's not really a high mileage oil in the sense that Maxlife is for instance.
An oil analysis costs between $20 to $35 depending on the level of service you choose. I've become addicted to oil analysis, I now do it on four cars in my family, as I am trying out different oils in each one. I bought a box of 12 sample kits from a local lab in my city, and they've been able to get the results to me very quickly, generally in just a day and a half after I send it.

FWIW, QS synthetic is not really synthetic, so you're paying synthetic prices for an oil with a hydrocracked petroleum base (also known as a group 3 base oil). That doesn't always mean the oil is not good, but generally speaking a true synthetic made with a PAO/ester base will give you superior performance and is better for long drain intervals.
If you really want to know how it performs in your engine though, run it for a while and then take a sample of it and send it in for analysis. Blackstone labs is a good choice. If you use them, ask for their Terry Dyson service, as he'll fully interpret the results for you for a small extra fee.

Re: New Quaker State Synthetic Oil
I've run the QS synthetic in my car for the past 40,000 miles. I change it alot, but on my two cam swaps, head swap, and oil pump swap, the engine was spottless. I was a Mobil 1 burner and was looking for an alternative. I wanted to use something I didn't have to order. Now , at 53,000 miles, my engine runs great and does not use a drop of oil.
There is nothing wrong with group 3 oils. Mobil 1's Tri Sythetic was a group 4, and wasn't the quality product many believed it to be.
