Default cam help

I have a 2001 ss ls1 with bolt ons. but i want a cam installed that will give me some power. looking for getting over 400hp at least. what do i need? I know my stuff but when it comes to getting the right set up it gets a little hard. finding the necessary research online is annoying.
I am looking to keep the stock heads....
Ill need a cam, lifters, rocker arms, gaskets....
Do i need to upgrade the rear end or tranny??
What all do I need? What lift should I get? What are you guys running?

there are dozens of answers out there.

but with stock heads...and OVER 400hp...your options are reduced a bit.

figure you'll need something in the 23x range, and most will give you ~.600" lift depending on the lobe.

some good choices are the TSP Torquer 2 or 3, Futral F13 or F14 (even the High Lift versions). or you can have any number of cam profiles custom ground.

a rocker upgrade is not needed, stock is more than sufficient. money is better spent elsewhere.

you'll want a new timing chain, and possibly new oilpump if you have any miles on yours.

as for the rear end and tranny.....the sort answer is maybe...the long answer is maybe.

plenty of guys have run 400rwhp+ on the stock rear end (like me) with no problems. same with the tranny (you don't mention auto or m6). others blow them up with stock power.

basically...run it till you break it, then fix it.

EDIT:

just looked at the cardomain page...looks like you have an M6

the trans itself is pretty stout from the factory. they are rated at 450# torque. so for the most part you are fine with that.

but the stock clutch won't hold the power for ****. it may hold enough to dog it around town for a while, but under WOT it will slip. i know mine did in the upper rpm with only 382rwhp and 50K miles.

so figure on upgrading the clutch. which is a whole nother topic

Well since your and auto youll need at least a 3500 stall. i like the tsp 233/239 cam imo, puts down great power

Check out the TR230/224, that'll get you right up around 400hp with stock heads.

I have done a Custom Crane 232/232 .624/.600 111+2 in a ALL stock '02 SS M6 car with ARH headers and GMMG catback. 403hp/387trq peak and averaged 401hp/383trq mostly!

VRx5 236/238 (.601"/.605"), LS7 lifters, Gold springs, ported oil pump, timing chain...3600 stall and 3.73s if you want, and 400whp shouldn't be a problem. What are you using your car for? I was going to go 233/239, but after talking to TSP, they said that cam peaked at 6500, which may or may not be ideal for your setup or driving habits...
