Default HIGH RPMs A Must?

When I had my 01 SS with the 231/237 592/603 111.5 it pulled hard all the way to my 6,800rpm limiter, and The dyno confirmed a similar leveling point for the power...

My next car is likely to be a 98 SS and I dont want to spin it too hard, and I want it to last me a while...

My question is this...what cams are out there that wont need to be spun much past, lets say 6200rpm? And secondly, are they worth it? My goal with this car is to make huge mid-range and top end power but without spinning her to the moon.... Mods will likely be your typical Lid, LTs, ORY, LS6 Intake, 3.73s, 3600 stall...

Suggestions?

maybe look into the "heads only" threads that are around recently. some KILLER power including great torque. and they are all using stock cam and the power is rpm range is very reasonable.

ported heads and a baby cam maybe? Something like an LS1 equivalent to a crane 227 or LPE 211/219 might work well. But hell don't listen to me, I'm a gen 2 guy. I gotta come in this section more often.

From what I have been reading and seeing, go with the tr224 cam or the one that TSP has. Those cams dont need to be spun over 6200 rpm's and the power starts down low. Or if you want something bigger, Tick performance came out with the Polluter cam and shows big Horsepower and torque all the way up to 6000rpm's, or at least thats what the graphs have been showing. Either way bud, Good Luck!

Good stuff so far...keep it coming...

Heads Only huh?...Never thought of doing that...does the stock cam even remotely max out the stock heads?...

Set of AFR 205's and custom ground Comp sounds like what your looking for.
I've got a special on AFR's and custom Comp cams right now for $2499. We'll spec a cam suited to you car and needs. There are a lot more questions to ask before we settle on final cam specs.

somebody got about 420rwhp with a stock cam and upgraded heads.

this was with all the bolt ons, including an electric waterpump.

here is the graph from the place that dynoed the car....it doesn't say, but i think they pulled the serp belt off for that run. with the EWP they were able to. seems like that gained about 10hp alone...so figure ~420rwhp in street form.

and that was from some ported 241s.

some milled AFR 205s might do even better. particularly in the low range since the runners are smaller.

here is the thread talking about the setup.

pretty impressive

I was thinking along those lines maybe a little smaller where he wants to go no higher than 6200 rpms, ideal you would shift the 224 around 6500 to keep the hp at max while going through the gears

Anyone think my lower rpm idea is not warranted? I mean, should I just spin it to 6500 or am I asking for trouble? Dont know how common a failure is at that rpm...or is it simply a 50/50 shot?

i have a reverse split TR230. Its a great cam for low end/mid range but i wouldnt expect HUGE numbers from it. With good heads, i can see 430 happening. I dont go past 6500 usually. I think you should be set with real good heads and a "small" cam. Lots of guys now are making killer power on just heads.

If you don't want to spin it above 6200 I would say a 220ish cam or even just get some 1.8 and leave the stocker in it.
