im doing a cam swap on my car and i have everything i need but cant decide on a timing set there are so many different choices and alot of them have been already talked about here but there is no defenate answere to swich is the dominate set

its between a ls2,katech,double roller

the car is gettin an LS6 cam with patriot double springs and 8psi on a rear mount on a stock LS1

Katech C5R money no issue hands down.

witry 02-11-2009 09:34 PM

would you also recommend doing a new cam and crank sprocket or just the chain?

ls2, i did mine with sprockets. i figure a tiny bit of extra insurance.

luckyhenriksen 02-12-2009 12:09 AM

I bought a JP double roller kit, it looks nice and comes with new sprockets. About 85 from sdparts

Another option is the Cloyes IRL chain. There is a thread in the internal Gen IV section on these chains with photo's.

Also, if you go with the Katech make sure it is the real deal. There are some less expensive knock-offs around now. Price will tell you quickly.

The LS2 chain is fine. Everybody has been freaking out lately because people have been breaking them on the Vettes, which has not been the chains faults. It's due to the harmonics (or lack thereof) of some of the pulleys being used.

I use LS2 chains on almost all of my builds and haven't had any problems in almost 2 yrs.

What pulleys are you using on these builds?

I went with an LS2 and have had no issues but that is just me. I don't doubt that Katech makes a better product, if nothing else it fits tighter.

streetassasin 02-12-2009 09:47 AM

Im going to use a ls2 when my cam goes in

On the F-bodies, either the ASP or Powerbond is fine. On the Vettes I've used the ATI unit or the stock one. I don't recommend the ASP on the Vettes anymore.

Ever had a problem with an SLP?

tillery 02-12-2009 10:30 AM

SLP is a repacked powerbond. Your fine.

witry 02-12-2009 10:47 AM

so you wouldnt recommend the one from summit i this its like 150 bucks but its summit brand?

Damian 02-12-2009 12:30 PM

I've never had a problem on an F-body PERIOD with any of the chains or pulleys. It seems to be a Corvette only design thats breaking them lately due to harmonics issues.

I've used SLP, Powerbond, ASP, ATI, etc etc etc on F-bodies and neither has given me a "problem". However my pulley of choice on F-bodies is the ASP, because it is the lightest of the choices.
