I always thought blue smoke was fuel burning, but maybe i cant tell the difference in blue and black smoke. My old 72 ford had a rebuilt 390 in it and smoked like a freight train with the old carb (ran really really rich), and it was blue smoke. Got a new carb and adjusted it and it quit smoking.

The tach/gauge sweep is a common 99 problem, it usually happens when your battery has low voltage/is on its way out. My car would do the same thing too even though it drove totally fine and started fine. I swapped batteries and have never seen it since.
