Kit: I feel for ya pal. Broken valve springs are a major PITA. Shakes your confidence knowing that disaster could be right around the corner every time you start your car. Over the last couple of years I've sold over 125 sets of REV dual springs. That's over 2000 springs! In that time, I've seen 10 broken springs (5 of them on my own vehicles). A small number of outer springs didn't get shotpeened and it appears that I got most of them! Both my vehicles have over 70,000 miles collectively and are daily drivers with cams that have with lifts of .560"-.580". Needless to say I was very unhappy with even one failure. After the second failed spring I put heat on REV to do better. It appears that the outer springs are the ones having the problem and Al said he was working on building a much improved outer spring. The first batch of new springs are due to arrive in a couple of weeks. My suggestion would be to replace the one broken spring now and then replace all of them at a later time. Be sure to check installed heights to insure the springs are not being worked close to coilbind.
As for the new springs, I feel confident that the percentage of spring failures will drop from .5% to .1%. I'm not sure if zero failures from tens of thousands of springs is possible, but it is always something we as vendors strive to achieve. Of course once we get the spring issue licked, the cam grinders will come up with more aggressive lobes to push the envelope further.
On another nother note, I just finished prepping a set of heads that had the Comp Cams 918 springs. One was broken. The customer was assured by Comp that the springs were not from the "bad batch" when he purchased them. One thing is for sure, when the single springs break, you almost always have to replace a bent valve
There are some dual spring assemblies made my Comp and Crane that can virtually eliminate failures, but they require machining the spring pads on the heads. They're a larger diameter spring and won't drop in. I haven't tried the Crane drop in duals, but like you I'm not sure I want to switch at this time. Good luck with your decision. Feel free to write or call me with any questions.
