Default home porting heads questions

I am porting my first set of ls1 heads and want to know what other porters are getting as far as volume on the intake ports when they are all done porting.I would like to keep mine below 225cc.This is for a set of 853's too.And any flow numbers they were able to achieve would be great.I am going to do 1 intake runner and 1 exhaust runner and then have it flowed on a superflow 1020 against a stock port,so i can see the difference the porting made.I will post pics of the ports when i am done with them, just waiting on some burs.any help would be appreciated. And any tips on the short side radius would be great if you got em.

best way I think to hand port. is do one improment on each port. And get them all done at that same time. if not it might be weeks later you go to start on another port thats as cast still.

Unless your have open access to the bench, and are going to put the head on it 50 times. And try diffrent things. Finishing one port and a head you want to end up useing. And seeing what it dose. Then going to work the rest in going to nothing for you, your not gona to gain anything from getting data like that.
Get a junk head or somthing too. I take so much time to do a good job, and our 1st time you don't know what your getting yourself into. Ask chuck about tring this, last winter he bought a set of used heads form the shop with the same ideas as you. And after like 2 days of work intro them, I saw him and he was like. F that I'm just gona buy somthing, and enjoy 60hours of free time this winter. haha

I'm doing a set of 243 right now. But had good resulted from some 241s I did last year.

thanks.i am def not a newbie when it comes to porting, and have had good results from other heads and fast 90 that i have done. But this is the first set of ls1 heads i am trying.I am going to do a single set to the best of my knowledge and test it,if it works great, then i will just repeat it,if not i will make changes and give it another shot.Your ports look nice on those 241's studderin,i am doing mine similar to those, but leaving more of the swirl ramp in.

yeah i know the 243's i have are very nice.i am doing the 853's just because its winter,i am a little bored, and i really like porting.I have a couple buddies around town that still have stock heads,so i may be able to negotiate selling them easily if they come out good.Anyway i will post a pic later of what i have done so far on it.

make sure to knock the swirl ramp out and also the rocker boss. A hole will come through when you knock off the rocker boss but the bolt will fill it back up. just dont get too too wild
These arent MY heads, but this is how my port looked, except this is in the rough cutting, i sanded and smoothed the exhaust and sand blasted the intakes

in my opinion the swirl ramp is important in promoting swirl, and think it is more important to keep it.It may not produce the best flow numbers, but should promote better power. All of the best performing heads i have seen leave the swirl ramp.I removed the rocker boss already as you can see in the pic.Any other opinions on the swirl ramp?

here are a couple pics of the finished intake port.I have not had much time to work on this so progress is a little slow but i am going to try and get the exhaust port done this weekend and then get it on the flowbench to see how it does.I will post up the flow numbers probably next week sometime

IMHO the swirl ramp is important, in stock applications. its a premoter for the air to start the swirling motion as it enters the cylinder. Amazing for your much needed low end tourque.

BUT..........in high perfermance applications, situations where you need really fast straight flowing airflow, during high rpm's, it can actualy "get in the way" especialy when youve changed the camshaft and in doing so changing peak torque location in the power band to a higher rpm. thats why NO aftermarket race head incorporates this feature.

myspelling sucks
