Comp test is a good quick check, but now that you suspect something... Leakdown test... It'll tell you what you need to know.

Right on. He needs to run a leak down to really find where the problem is at. It could be bent valves, ring issues, or even a head gasket problem. A CT will only tell you which holes have the problem. Additional I would wonder which 3 cylinders are at 100 psi, and also what do the others read?

Exactly right. The compression test is great for identifying whether or not you have a problem. The leakdown will tell you where/what your problem is. Leakdown those cylinders and get her fixed up!

I'm in the exact same boat- compression test on LS1 today showed 3 cylinders with 100 psi (Nos 2, 3, and 5). Others were 150-175 psi.

I suppose this is a stupid question, but how do I do a leakdown test? What am I looking for??

I was just assuming rings and decided that I needed a total rebuild or a new motor...any ideas or help much appreciated. Is it likely this is something other than rings?? Thanks.

This is an engine that is runinng? My engine sat for 2 years and i did a compression test before starting and 7 were 0-60psi and one was 135psi before i started my motor. Now all 8 are 150-153psi.

SSCamaro4- not meaning to hijack your thread, I figure the response to my question also helps you.

I asked a friend to give the car a once over in his shop. He told me they ran a compression check on each cylinder and I posted the results. The car runs, drives, and feels very strong. I was surprised by the results of the test, but it enough to make me put the brakes on my cam and header install...want to figure out if I have bigger problems first. Thanks.
