Also does anyone know with the utmost certainty that a t56 will match up with an '01 lq4 with no problems ( I know 99 and 00 will not, but I have seen others say 01 is a problem too) As long as its an aluminum headed lq4 it will match up?......anyone?

correct.
large flange sticks out around .400,
normal flange is pretty much flush with rear main seal

Not as big of a problem as most people claim. Swapping the crankshaft for an LS1 crank, or even an LQ9 crank, will solve the trans fitment issues.

then you have to re balance the rotating assembly.

Yea, it's really not a huge issue though. If you pick up a '99 or '00 block for a good enough price it's worth it. That's what I'm doing currently. Besides, I would have gone thru the block to replace parts even if it were a newer block anyways, so swapping the crank isn't going to kill me. I'm putting new bearings, rod bolts, lifters, and a cam in it as well as the crank before I put it in the car.

actually i prfer the large flange 6.0 since the offset of the crank is correct for use with a th350/400 without the spacer, hughes makes a sbc flexplate with ls crank bolt pattern.

What is this flange thing that I keep hearing about? Is that another part you have to swap out to make the T56 work on the older LQ4? Is it actually ON the crank? Like I said, I bought a crankshaft from a 2006 Corvette that I'm going to swap into my motor so I can use a T56, but I keep hearing about this crank flange. What the crap is that?

u do not have to worry about it if your crank is 01+
99-00 and even some 01 6.0 were equipped with cast iron heads and the rear
of the flange was thicker than normal. the newer 6.0 just use a standard 3.62 crank along with spacer for use with 4l80e

Yea I know. I am going to have the machine shop that will balance the rotating assembly for me, also swap the reluctor wheels from the cranks.

any machine shop that is familiar with ls engine should have the goodson tool on hand, or should refer you to a shop that has the capability to install and remove correctly

NemeSS thanks for all the info about the 317's!

How will that setup react to the heads if they aren't milled?

The heads also have 2.04-1.58 valves. The only clearance issue was on the outside lip of the piston, the dish had plenty of clearance.
