I realize that your not suppose to compress the lifters when checking push rod lenght. Imo if you do accidently compress the lifer while performing this procedure and there is no fulid in the lifter the spring will always return the cup back to top right away. Where as if there is fluid in the lifter and you do compress it, it might take a few seconds to return to the top and you might not catch that it did compress. If you can make a solid lifter that would be the most accurate way. I made one with my stock lifter out of 5/8" tube cut to a lenght so the cup and clip fit in and no ratting when i shook it. But my new lifters were taller so the modded lifters didnt do much help for me.
