Default shorty headers bad?

I was told that if i run shorty headers I might as well run the stock manifolds on my 02 camaro.. is that true?? this guy said that breaking 360whp is darn hard without having long tube headers.. can anyone shine a light on this? im shooting for 390-400whp using shorty headers, patriot stage 2 heads and a voodoo cam with a ls6 intake.. this is a t56 car.. but are shortys that bad?

I think it depends on the construction of the shorty headers. The collector area is all important. The length of the primary tubing is last on the list.

so pretty much a good set of shorties will still help me get to my goals? I will have a set of patriot heads and a healthy voodoo cam to help out the power.. so upper 300's isnt out of the question?

Shorties are said to unleash about 10hp? I'd still go with some mids or LT's if I were you though

they are good if you flip them around to make a homemade turbo setup.

if you can run LT's, i'd do it. shorties are really only beneficial if you don't have ground clearance.

Are there reasons you WANT to use shorties rather than long tubes?

A lot of people will use shorties for emissions compliance. Shorties aren't bad, it's just a matter of if you want to put your money into them because the gains are pretty small compared to the same investment for long tubes. I have mids right now, mostly because of ground clearance concerns. I still think about shorties because I need to do emissions testing. In the end, you need to consider if the car will be as fast as you want with shorties. If you want to run high 12's, then you can do that with stock manifolds or shorties. If you want to go 11's, then you should plan on long tubes or supercharging.

Are you in Cali? Is that what is deterring you from going LT's?

I said this in another post before but Pat G made 395 to the wheels in his M6 with completely stock exhaust (headers to catback). AFR 205 heads and CheaTR cam. LTs just sound SO much better and you don't have to spend so much on a set of heads

If your not worried about emissions, dump the shorties and get longtubes, shorties will probably hurt you more then help you if your running heads and cam....what voodoo cam do you have?

I had shorties just because of Mass. emissions laws. Once Mass. went to OBDII I dumped the shorties and got ARHs. I added heads at the same time but all I know is that the engine breathes like an aqualung now. LTs, don't leave home without 'em.
