Default TR220, MMS 218, or B1 cam for A4

Just as title says. I can't decide between the three of them. I have a SY3500, headers, induction, and will be putting the cam in later as a full H/C/I package. Input would be well appreciated.. Pros and cons of each?

I have the T1 and it runs strong and idles great with ls1 edit. Pulling pretty close to 400 or more with a few issues I have to get fixed. This is a h/c car, not bat for a t1 and s2 heads

I like the TR 220 but there is not much difference between those cams.

I have a B1 with a SY3500 stall. It's a great cam, idles good and is totally streetable. It does have a nice little lope to it though

My TB hole is at 13/64s and I have raised my idle to 800rpm both in gear and park. It idles good this way, but I'm going to drill a second small hole into the TB to drop the IACs a tad. They are at 45-50 now in gear warm at idle which seems to give me a little surge on warm starts.

The MMS 218 will sound/idle like stock...but make alot more power. I like it lumpy though...I have the MMS 242 in mine

I had a guy reply to a post in another thread that he had installed many TR220 cams and they idled better than the MMS 218? I didn't think that it sounded rightb/c the lift and duration of the 218 is smaller.

B1 cam here! I picked up 31rwhp with mine and droped a solid .3 tenths with tuning.

Out of those three, I would go with a B1. I had one in my car, without any real tuning my car put down a freaky 370 rwhp. I did have idle issues since the car was never tuned. I ran the car at the track with the B1 before my converter was installed, on ET Streets and skinnies it turned a 12.71@110.50 mph. The best mph was 111.10 mph. It idled ok without tuning, just the sensors on the TB kept killing the car with sudden movements. If I actually tuned the car I wouldv'e loved that cam, I got rid of it for a larger one though.

What was your best time with that cam after the converter install?

The ramp speed of a cam can have a lot to do with the idle quality. Such as in this case, a cam with more duration with a more aggressive ramp can idle better then a cam with less duration with slower ramp speed. Also a cam with faster ramps will make more power under the curve.

Either of these's cams would be a good choice. Hope this helps.

I turned a 12.02@112.10 mph. I figure since my new cam gained me 20 extra horses, all I got was really mph from this one. I wouldv'e probably turned 12.20's here in Vegas. To tell you the gain, I ran the car before the cam and was turning 13.0's at 105,106mph. So with my B1 I gained .3 tenths and about 5mph.

Would i have any valvetrain issues with the B1? I also want the car to sound close to stock, but have a nice little lope every now and then. What springs, pushrods, retainers do you recommend. Sounds like a promising cam so i might have to get one.

thanks guys

I would strongly suggest upgrading your valvetrain anyways. I install some ISKY Racing springs, MTI harden pushrods, and retainers. It's easier to do it all at once. Just my $.02

Thunder can hook you up with them or ask MTI to send you them with the cam. I would also do the titanium retainers. This cam will not sound stock with cutout open or closed so be advised that it has a nice lope to it. If and when you get tuning you can set the idle higher to take away some of the lope if you want but i like some lope to mine This cam will do well with stock and aftermarket heads. Good luck!
