Two years ago, at around 90,000 miles I installed some aftermarket valve springs, push rods and a cam. The cam was just a mild cam (224/227 .563/.569 114 LSA), Stock length Heat Treated Chrome-Moly Pushrods, and valve springs good up till .600 lift. After install I got the car running and noticed a tapping noise. I talked to several people that said "LS1's are just going to be noisy like that after a cam swap". Here is some photos of what happened to the motor heading to work one morning. I was cruising along at about 55mph when all of a sudden that little tapping got really big for just a few seconds and then just went away...the car died and I coasted into a parking lot...

Are you checking lifter preload/pushrod length?

Also keep in mind LS7 lifters are ~.060 taller, and will usually need a different length pushrod than the LS1 lifters.

Noise was probably due to to short of a pushrod since you used a stock length rod on a cam with a smaller base circle. Probably had nothing to do with what happened to your engine, because it looks like a valve spring broke and cause "some" PTV contact, lol at valve IN THE PISTON. The louder noise you heard was probably the initial contact with the pistion, the valve banging around for a split second, and then embedding itself into the piston. Although I am an amateur and could be wrong.

So if this guy has the wrong length pushrods then why is only ONE lifter/cylinder making noise?....to me that makes no sense, if theyre the wrong length then every cylinder would make that noise. Unless the guy at the factory made the one too long or short....or maybe the oil hole is clogged and after it runs and gets hot it starts tapping. I got a pushrod straight from Comp for my stang and found a piece of metal Inside the pushrod and had to break it apart in order to get it out, thats why they put on stickers saying to check the hole.

I'm voting for possibly exhaust leak at the header....I had a sound I SWEAR was a lifter/rocker but it was really an exhaust gasket that blew out on one cylinder....

and more info like when did the noise start like someone else mentioned.

can't be pushrods if its only doing this after getting warm. i have the same problem. after running for about 30 minutes i hear a tick and then goes away. starting to thing maybe i have a exhaust leak at the header.
