Default PAC 1518 Setup Questions

Hey all.

Cam: G5x2 (232/240 112+4; .595"/.609") X-ER
Springs: PAC Racing 1518 Beehives

1) Will I be ok with the stock locks/retainers? I see flowtech induction sells a kit with Chromoly Retainers/Locks, but being on a budget if the stock ones will work ok I'll go that route for the time being if it won't cause any problems.

2) Shims. Where should I set the installed height for these? 1.800" is 130#. Should I just install them there, or should I add a 0.015" (1.785" installed), or a 0.030" (1.770" installed). I'm kind of at a loss for what would be the best here.

Thanks guys.

I would shim to .050 from coil bind.

Yes stockers are fine.

Ok so going off of this chart.

Max Coil Bind: 1.080"
+ 0.050" Clearance
+ 0.610" Max lift
= 1.740" Installed Height?

Which would be a 0.060" shim MAX? (assuming factory installed height is 1.800" - which will be checked).

IMO call LGM, it is their cam and they would know best.

It's a standard X-ER cam, not some mythical special lobe propriatary to LGM.

I just don't know the best way to set up the beehives.

PAC's spec sheet there gives a .070 cushion between max lift and coil bind...so you should be ok with that. would put you at 1.760 installed height. I think you'd be fine at 1.800 though too, your seat load will only increase by 13# or so with a .040 shim.
Important thing I think is to check your installed height first, if it is way off 1.800 then you need to shim accordingly.

That I know, believe me. Why I said to call LGM was because they know the exact spring pressure requirement of that cam. According to that info and the PAC 518 specs, you then make your decision.
If at 1.8 install height, the springs are within the cam spring pressure requirements, then that is the height required. If not, then you shim just accordingly to increase pressure with a safety margin.
Shimming will reduce the spring life so in doing it, one must be careful and understand that.

Gotcha, I thought you were basically telling me to go to LGM to BUY the springs, when I know they will want to sell the COMP 921 (what they sell in their cam kits).

I feel in my application the 921 is way overkill and way too heavy esp with stock lifters.

I think the G5x2 + PAC1518 + 11/32 Manton Pushrods will make for a nice, quiet, long lasting and good performing valvetrain!
