i recently purchased a bare 5.3 block in good shape for 30 dollars. now comes the task of finding the stuff to put it back together with. Id like to bore it out to an ls1 bore but would like a forged piston, i wouldnt mind a little longer rod either. but i cant seem to find any factory bore flat top pistons for an ls1 for a longer rod under 700 dollars. any info or insight would be greatly appreciated this is goin in a 72 nova with a set of worked 5.3 heads and undecided about a cam possibly a ms3. its gonna be carbed and i plan on sprayin the **** out of it lol. and if anyone has an ls1 crank in decent condition im interested ...i dont want a truck crank either id prefer the lighter weight one. thnx

There is a bored out 5.3 to 5.7 short block in the TX forum for $1200 which is about what it is going to take you to build that block. IMO find yourself a complete motor on craigslist and rebuild it.

I'm doing something similar, iron 5.3 bored to 5.7 size. I'm using a stock crank, SCAT 6.125-length 4340 forged rod, and a Probe forged flat-top piston. I got the pistons for machine shop cost, but even at full cost they're no where near $700, more like $450-500. We're going solid roller valvetrain, probably Dart heads, distributor conversion, carb'd intake, also on alcohol. Hopefully will be bad ***, going in my dirt modified.

I can get you the pistons you want for less than $500, I have a stock crank, forged rods and can bore your block. You will love the carbed set up and you are smart for going with the iron block.
