I won't use wood, they can get shaving in the block or break. you can get solid dowels but they didn't fit well when I tried those. The best thing i've found to use is brake line.

I thought about the wood thing. When I used them they felt likke they barely touched anything going in or out. I changed my oil 80 miles after cam install anyway
Point being, you dont have to spend 100+ dollars on such a easy tool to make. Plus, when the hell do these people recieve thier products they paid for? Seems people are always waiting for this tool. BS

Yes, if you are changing the oil pump/timing chain, you will have to drop it as much as you can. Its tight getting the oil pump pick up tube bolts back in, but it can be done. Remember, when re-installing the pick up tube, do NOT force it. Do not get the bolt started and use the bolt to bring the tube in. You need to hold the tube up with your fingers and then tighten the bolt. Pinching the oil pump pick up o-ring is not fun.
Edit - 10mm racthet wrench will be your freind.

I just did a cam swap last night using the wooden dowel rods. Used the new cam to cut them to size. Drivers side slid right in, passengers side had to work it in but didnt force it in. Spent a whopin 86 cents!
