Default oil pressure WTF??????

before i did anything to my car the oil pressure was fine. when i turned dthe car off the oil pressure remained at 40 psi. on a cold start it went up to 55 till it warmed up and wot up to about 70-75 or so. since ive done the headers and cam on a cold start its at around 45, idling around 38, wot at around 60-65, adn when i turn the car off it falls to 20???? whats going on? is this a sign my oil pump is going out? if it is which one should i get? SLP or Katech? help me out guys. anythiing similar happening to you? thanks in advance.

It looks a-okay to me! Mine does the same thing. I run Neo-Synthetic race oil in 0w-5, and filter it remotely through a Canton Racing remote canister #25-100. At idle mine is around 48psi. When it's cold it's at around 58, then when it warms up its around 45psi at cruising speed. At wide-open throttle it goes to 60psi. This is exactly where I want it. You didn't say what kind of oil you used. When the iginition is turned off my guage shows 40psi, so it's just the default in the guage there.

My guage doesn't always top at 40 psi, when the ignition is off. Sometimes, it can go all the way down to 0psi. Some guage will go to a certain reading when the system is off, even though they aren't actually measuring anything. Your oil sounds fine to me, also. It's not the problem. How many quarts are you running? Have you always used the Amsoil filter? Please send me a private message.

I don't understand at all what you are talking about. Are you worried that your getting only 10 psi oil press when the engine is [OFF].

You should be getting ZERO oil pressure when you shut down the engine. How can an oil pump make pressure when it's not turning? If you indicate oil press after you shut the engine down, your gauge or sending unit is screwed up.

You need about 40 psi during hot idle, and somewhere close to about 55 psi at highway speeds [oil hot]

I'm not entirely sure what your definition of "need" is, but if you have 10 psi of oil pressure at idle, you are in no danger of ruining anything...

That said, I would probably worry if you were not pushing at least 20 psi at idle on the hottest of days, after abusing the crap out of your engine.

55psi while cruising on the highway? I never see that on a summer day! I am only at 1700 rpms...

Why not use autotap or something similiar to chekc it and see what the sensor is actually reading. This way you can see if the gauge really is messed up.

The guy that started this thread stated: "now its down to 10 psi with the engine off."

I said, that it should read ZERO with the engine turned off! How the hell can he have oil pressure on an engine that is not running?

TaTommy says: "I'm not entirely sure what your definition of "need" is, but if you have 10 psi of oil pressure at idle, you are in no danger of ruining anything..."

When did I say all you need is 10 psi at idle? If he had 10 PSI at idle, he would be looking at a low oil pressure light.

This whole thread is a waist of time ....

Oh God, we are beating a dead horse here, but for clarification:

I stated that 10psi is fine at idle as far as not damaging anything goes.
I know YOU said you NEED 40 psi at idle.
I also understand that the guy's problem is his gauge is "F"ed up because it should be reading zero when the engine is off, not 10psi.

OK, I'm going to bed!

Stock gauges are CRAP, period. Speedo is crap, Tach is crap. If i could i'd change all of them to get an accurate reading.
