The general rule of thumb is -7 degrees of overlap at .050" will pass smog every time. -4 degrees might pass, but the cats need to be really good and the tune needs to be razor sharp. 0 degrees of overlap at .050" almost NEVER passes.

TR 224 on a 114LSA = -4 degrees (maybe pass)
TR 230 on a 111LSA = 5 degrees (dirty, no way pass)
TR 220 on a 114LSA = -8 degrees (definitely pass)
215/230 on a117LSA CheaTR = -11 degrees (definitely pass)

How do you know what the overlap is? On my cam card it doesn't have overlap or do I not know what to look for?

sweet thanks patrick! i've got a call into TR about possibly sending back this tr230 cam in exchange for the cheater or the tr220 beings that the tr230 is still in the wrapping and box it came in and has never been used

intake duration + exhaust duration divided by two, then subtract LSA times two.

example- MS3 237/242 113lsa

237+242=479
479/2=239.5
113 X 2 226
239.5-226=13.5 degrees of overlap

correct me if I'm wrong

Your car has -7 degrees overlap. According to Pat G you should pass smog right on the dot.

Sorry for all of the posts. Isn't it a lot easier to just pay $300 every few years and have the power/setup you really want? I ask this because I'm moving back to NorCal in 6-7 months. I see a lot of Cali Tech members with signatures that would never pass smog. Good luck.

TR227/227 116LSA

227+227=454
454/2=227
227-116=111
111-116=-5 barely pass also?

Is the negative overlap of stock or close to stock cams what makes them a good start for forced induction?
