Default Am I forgetting anything?

I am about to do a heads/cam swap on my 98 SS. I have attempted to buy everything in advance to minimze downtime. Can you think of anything I am missing?

Here's what I have on hand...

PP stage 2 5.3s
TSP 231/237 cam
7.4" chrome moly pushrods
new lifters
ARP head bolt kit
Head gaskets
timing cover seal
front seal
water pump gaskets
bolt for crank pulley
Katech timing chain

I am buying some center bolt valve covers locally along with the coil brackets.
I'm hoping to re use the header gaskets.

Do I have it covered?

Get some good assy lube for the cam and rockers, RTV for the front cover, and some locktite. If you dont have a good 6 point socket for the crank bolt then get a good impact socket from NAPA. Dont forget a quality 3 point puller.

I should have mentioned more details.

I have an LS6 intake and I have a Katech oil pump on there already. The reason is because I already had an oil pump failure. The car got a new crank, bearings and oil pump last fall.

I have lock tite and rtv here but no assy lube.
I guess I guess I'll go buy a socket for the crank bolt and a puller. Thanks!

IMO, skip the assembly lube and just lube the cam with motor oil. Some assembly lubes were possibly clogging up some oil pumps. A good drenching in oil will more than suffice. Remember to soak the lifters in oil prior to install, too. As long as your heads are not milled, those rods will work fine.

i just used a standard 24mm 1/2" socket and a 24" breaker bar for the crank bolt. also just the standard issue cheap autozone pulley puller. took a bit to get it straight and adjusted on the pulley but it worked.

sounds like you have just about all you need. good luck man, h/c/i are loads of fun

Please supply the source of that information.

Dont worry,
Assy lube will quickly disolve upon contact with oil. They also contain moly which coats and prevents metal to metal contact for quite some time.

Glad to see a post like this...not to hijack your thread Kevyn, but I have a few of the same questions that may help us both... I have an 01' WS6 which i'm preparing to do an h/c swap on and I have the following things..what else will I need...

-Stage II Heads (Ti retainers, 918 springs, etc. installed already)
-TR 224 Cam
-Ported LS6 Oil Pump
-NOS 5177 Kit
-MAC Headers & O/R Y
-Cam Swap Gasket Kit
-TR 7.350 Pushrods
-Rollermaster Single Timing Chain w/ Torrington Bearing
-McLeod Single Disk Kevlar/Organic clutch

I think that's all I've got laying around right now. I know I need head gaskets still, as I don't have them, and I'll be getting ARP Head Bolts, a Walbro 340 intank, and Loctite, Assy. Lube, and RTV Sealant. I know I also need a pulley-puller. I intend to get the crank bolt undone with a breaker bar. I know I will also need Spark plugs with the NOS kit. What else will I need? I need to make sure I have all of the gaskets, becasue I have a feeling i'm going to be missing some. Thanks a bunch.

No problem at all. It's all good.
I Nearly went to Autozone for the puller today.
I'm getting a little excited about tackling this project by myself.

I laid out a little shrine and took a pic or two. Once I get the puller and valve covers, there will "Nothing to it, but ta do it" Famous last words...
"Hey... it's only nuts and bolts... how bad could it be?"

Wish me luck

Good luck man, and the same for myself. Since it seems that you'll get around to it before me, I'll also throw around a few ideas I got today...

There are a few optional things. Since you're not doing solely a cam swap, you won't need the JPR tools/pen magnets for the lifters, but you may indeed wnat to upgrade your lifters. In my case, and just for reference, I'm probably going to go with a high-per version, if someone deems it necesarry. I haven't really looked into them. Make sure you have lots of oil, coolant, RTV sealant, assembly lube, loctite and misc. gaskets (EGR seals, manifold gaskets, exhaust gaskets, etc.) and lots of bolts (head bolts, etc.) I know i'm going to miss something. I also, as you may, need O ring connectors just in case for the oil pump, in case I destroy one. I'm hoping I don't break anything else in the process of installing this stuff So here's wishing ya luck...

Good luck to you all, be carefull when your installing the O-ring, dont force it, make sure it slides in right without binding.

My opinion...take it or leave it. In the interest of supplying all of the information that I've read on this very board, I thought I'd throw it in there FWIW. No one, including me, claimed it to be gospel. Not being touchy...just don't throw the "flag" on well-intended advice. A few cam swaps here on just oil lube with no issues, that's all.

If I dont think its accurate I will flag it. And you think that not using assy lube is good advice? Sorry, but good intentions ruin 6000.00 LS1's
