did the jb welded socket work?

They make like ez-out sockets. like the sockets sears sell to get off stripped or lock lugnuts, they have the spirals on the inside that bite better into it the harder you turn it. I think 22mm is a common size of a car lugnut? if not might be able to buy one of those sockets not sure

You may have a serious problem. Those sensors will twist apart pretty easily. You may end up having to drill out the threaded end.

I didn't know the valley plate could come completely off with the knock sensors still in?

The sensors are threaded into the block through the valley plate. If he pulled the valley off with the knock sensor in hes got some serious problems. I just had mine off as I installed the ls6 valley cover.

Well I've never pulled off the valley cover with a knock sensor still in there. But there are big rubber grommets under the knock sensors (pic from ls1howto.com), it's not metal under them:

It will come out but you will most likely need new knock sensor seals afterward.
