Default The way to 383!

I am thinking about to build a 383 shortblock,

My friend has a 01 ls1block that needs a hone,
And also he have mahle pistons and h-beam rods, my idea was to purchase those parts as a start,

My question is, what is the way to 383?
What length of rods?
What crank?
And is the block honed or bored? And if so, how much?

3.905" is a common bore to use. It's just enough to clean up any out-of-round in the cylinder, but not enough to hurt the strength of the block. All you need to do is hone it, less than .010". With a 4" stroke crank, you get ~383ci. Most piston manufacturers make pistons for a 6.125 rod length, which tend to be most popular for rod manufacturers. It's like they work together!

thanks for answering man.

i think his pistons are 0.30over, is it possable to bore the ls1block 0.30 over?

No it's not. The stock aluminum LS1 bore is I think 3.898" and the max most folks hone one to 3.905".
.030" over is not usually offered for an aluminum LS1. .030" over is more common for the 4" bore iron blocks.
Do you have an aluminum block or iron?
You need to find out exactly what size the pistons are and what crank and rods they were designed for. If the pistons are disigned to work with a 4" crank and 6.125" pistons then you will be good. If they were designed for a 3.622" stock crank you will need different ones.

Thanks man that was a realy informing post.

The rods are correct size, i'll have to check on the pistons.

The plan was to use 01 ls1 block,

How does a stroked motor like this behave compared to 4xx bigger bore lsx motor?

On the 04 LS6 blocks you can do .010" over. Otherwise, going 3.905" is the way to go.

And a 4.000" stroke crank and 6.125" rods are correct.

the bigger stroke has a higher piston speed which translate into a higher air flow volume into the cylinder.you can add about 10 degree cam duration over a stock stroke ls1.big bore small stroke motor high rpm , long stroke small bore great torque motor.

Yeah, you can add 10 degrees and maintain the same drivability.

However, with all other things being equal, a 383 will not outpower a 346. It will make 30 to 40 ft-lbs more torque, but the 3.9" bore restriction is the problem. This is offset with a larger cam without the drivability penalty, but a 4.000"+ bore is a better choice to support higher flowing heads.

My advice is to go with as much bore and stroke as you can afford - you'll make more power everywhere.

Unless you are going to turn some serious RPM, that 3.905" bore shouldn't be too much of a restriction. These LSx heads can flow a lot of air through a small 2.00/2.02 valve. Good heads and a smart cam choice, and I think the 383 would run like a raped ape.

Like jake said, I would just build a stout 346 all day long over a 383, unless I was using a 4"+ bore.

I would have a 4xx block if i could,
But a.t.m something like that isn't a option, becuse of the crisis, but i am thinking of the 383 because all i have to import is the crank, and i want to go all forged,

So my thougths where that this could make the most of what i allready have in the car,
I got a 226/226cam now and a beefed up 346, shooting 150.
My thougths where to go 383 and much agressiver cam, and then add a second stage to the nitrous,

That should be a good step forward from what i got now, for little money

Why? That's almost a 40ci disadvantage?

You are probably gonna need new pistons as well (unless you can find a .200" thick gasket). The pistons' compression height for a 3.622" crank and a 4.00" crank are different.

Then if the Mahle pistons you have found are for a 3.905" bore, 6.125" rods and 4" crank you are ready to rock. Get the block honed to 3.905", toss in a 236°/240°ish cam and have at it!!
