Default thrust bearing problems

i have a 1998 LS1 and the engine has 77k miles on it, and the thurst bearing is toast and the crank is trashed. it only has 1k miles on it since i did the cam and heads. i also have another 98 LS1 that has 4k miles on it since the total rebuild and the thurst bearing is toast in it too. these were both in front of T56's and im wondering what is causeing this.

Who built the engines, or were they factory assemblies?

one was a factory short block with just ARP rod bolts and new rod bearings and the other was totally rebuilt.

i talked to the machining teachers here at school a minute ago as well as drivetrain teachers and all they can come up with is holding the clutch in causing it to wear.

i checked endplay and its visibally 1/8" (.125"). spec is .0015"-.0078"

if holding the clutch in caused thrust bearing failures this place would be littered with with posts of thrust bearing failures and GM would have a ton of lawsuits about the problem. Since neither has happened im gonna guess there is something else going on. Could just be a bad build on the rebuilt motor and bad luck on the factory motor... but i really doubt it has anything to do with the pressure from the slave cylinder/clutch.

Unless of course there is something wrong with your clutch/tranny installation that is constantly putting pressure on the crank/flywheel, like torquing in the tranny in with the splines and disk not lined up. That still unlikely though id think.

dude we had this same problem with my brothers 383 ls1 build, we never found the answer because after blaming a million different things and installing new thrust bearings four different times the shop that built the motor finally got it right the last time. whatever they did worked because 5,000 miles later the motor is still running strong. they tried to blame the way my brother drives and engages the clutch but i know thats bs

im thinking the clutch issues i had in the past might have caused this.
