Default Installing rocker arms???

Do I have to follow the sequence procedure for installing rocker arms (well, according to my HAYES manual) like they do on LT1 engines? ...you know, putting the #1 piston top-dead -center and so on..... I don't get why you have to on LS1's since they're non-adjustable, I know you have to on LT1's since they're adjustable and must be set within allowable backlash. -Thanks!

No, I don't believe so. Just install them, torque them to I believe 22ft-lbs (Check that before you do it, I'm not sure on that torque value) Rotate the motor over and re-torque. You may want to put some thread sealant on the bolts just for good measure.

Yes there is a sequence for tightening the rocker arms.

TDC = Cylinders 1 & 6

Than

1/4 turn or 90 degrees on crank puller = Cylinders 8 & 5

Another 1/4 turn or 90 degrees on crank puller = Cylinders 7 & 4

Another 1/4 turn or 90 degrees on crank puller = Cylinders 3 & 2

Some guys just torque them down and will be ok too.

I follow the sequence, then check them all again without sequence.

Correct! Follow the sequence or risk stripping the bolt holes in the head.

Hmmm....I don't see how you would, that's only 22ft-lbs. maybe I'm just missing something.

Yup, you're missing the fact that you'll be compressing the valve springs with that bolt *if* the cam is not on the base circle. Go ahead and try it, let us know how it goes...

Sequencing doesn't take much longer and it makes it easier to install the rocker arms with
the cam on base circle.

This way you only have your preload on the lifter and very little valve spring
compression. Without sequencing you will have some cam lobes at higher liftpoints, thus requiring you to compress the valve springs down hard with the rocker arm bolts and aluminum head threads.

you have to make sure there is no pressure on the springs to get the right amount of torque thats why there is a sequence

Yeah, makes sense. I've never had any trouble with the ones that I've done the way that I described in the second post, but from now on I'll probably be sequencing them as described here. Just makes more sense and I can't see it taking but a few extra minutes. Good info guys!
