Default ls1 ticking??

I just bought a 98 trans am , my first ls1 car its a auto and i got on it a little last night and had my hand on the shifter and when i started to get on it i accidentally slipped it into neutral and it back fired and shut off immediately so i came to a stop put it in park, checked the coolant and whatnot and went to start it, started up and then noticed a slight ticking sound i'm pretty sure it's not a rod knock which leads me to think it's a lifter ticking,it may have been ticking before all this happened but is it something i should be worried about? Could what i have done caused this to happen? how much would it cost to fix?
i prolly sound like an idiot but im new to these cars, plus im only 17 and still learning

pull the valve covers and check the easy things like a pushrod, check and make sure your rockers are tight, and look for broken springs...if not, your next step would be checking the lifters, after that, its just trouble..

Most likely its a pushrod. Just take the 10 or so minutes to pull the valve covers and take a look. You may be able to tell which side its coming from.

Good luck and congrats on your ls1 f-body purchase

This is a STOCK LS1? No mods or HP tunes? The rev limiter should have kicked in and prevented any damage. (ideally) It does not mean that no damage occured. Just for future knowledge, you have a factory rev limiter set in the ECM that protects you when you rev up, however you are not protected when you downshift. I know its a common sense issue, but you'd be surprised how many people dont keep that in mind when they downshift hard. You haven't flushed it with seafoam or any other "excess carbon build-up engine flush" recently have you? I have heard of a very similar incident involving one revving the engine high and it backfiring and began tapping. I heard him mention suspecting gaps being caused from the seafoam.

well i now know this did not cause the ticking because my uncle just said he heard it when i drove off from his house and i got on it and it shutdown and whatnot about an hour after i left there..... also another thing that just happened a few minutes ago when i was on the freeway going about 65-70 i let off the throttle and the car started to miss and jump a little bit...what could this be?
