Default Old School needs help with new gen3 engine

This is my first gen3 engine.I normaly build 383,406ci old school.I have hung around this forium for a month or 2 now reading posts and searching parts.I'm still not sure on what I need.
I have a 2003 6.0,a set of 2005 799 casts 5.3 heads,eldbrock victor junior intake for carb and a 6010 msd box.
This will be a weekend drag car and crusing car shows..the engine will have a stock lower end and the car will be automatic trans with a 3500 stall.I would like a recomindation on a cam&springs (that won't break the bank with a good sound and hp gain). Also which head gasget,6.0 or 5.3?Should the heads be cut?
I hate to ask for cam help but most of the posts that I read are about fuel injected engines.

Well Ive done many old school motors and this SS in my sig is my first Gen 3 as well (im 23) so I dig where your comin from man.

First of all, do NOT cut the 5.3 heads...with the small chamber already the compression is going to go up going on a 6L. Im not 100%, but I think your going to want to use 6L head gaskets and not 5.3's...someone correct me if im wrong.

An off the shelf camshaft isnt going to be the thing for you, b/c they are mostly for fuel injected motors and that carb is going to want a much narrower LSA than the standard 112-114 the average FI cam is ground on.

I would say your going to want a 232ish intake and 236ish exhaust duration @ .050 and around .600 lift on a 108-109 or so LSA. Check out the newest Hot Rod magazine and they dyno (im pretty sure its a 6L) with 4 different Comp cams with FI and Carbs on each one...pretty good info and may be something you want to check out.

Also, you may wanna contact Predator-Z or Patrick G...both are members on here and do custom camshafts for these motors. I have seen good results from people using cams from both of these guys on FI motors but im sure they could help on a carbed one as well.

Hope this helps

The 799 (although on a 5.3L) are similar to a 243 casting (LS6 heads) and have 64.5cc chambers). They are actualy used as substitute 243s.

What 6.0 (364ci) do you have? LQ4 (dished pistons) or LQ9 (flat-top pistons)?

Gaskets GM 6.0 MLS.

You'll also need to give a bit more info to spec a cam:
What type of auto tranny?
What exhaust setup? (from manifolds to back)
What gears in the differential?
Weight of car?
What rpm shifts?
str of stall?

basicaly the whole setup....

Predator-z I haven't pulled the heads on the 6.0 yet.Its out of a 03 truck I think.I was waiting to gather up more parts before I tear it down.Is there anyway to tell without pulling the heads? The setup is 350 turbo,3500 stall,it will footbrake at 2000rpms.long tube headers that I haven't bought yet.410 gear ratio. The 88 s10 will weight around 3000 lb.I would like to shift at a rpm that the stock lower end will take?
thanks for the quick reply guys

There were some pics floating around here of the under side of the pistons...they were different and you could tell which motor you had. Ill try to see if I can find them with a search.

it seems like the easiest way to tell is to know what vehicle the motor came from.....LOL

other than that you might have to open her up.

Chances are that its a LQ4 just because there more of them laying around, but i guess chances aren't good enough when you need piston to valve clearence.

As for springs there are comp 918's, PRC, and patriot. They all have good springs available.

In stock form, reliably 6500 or so. You could always change the rod bolts without taking motor apart (Katech bolts are a direct swap)

With you wanting drag race it on the weekends, the Katech rod bolts would be a good idea. Like Pred-Z said, they are a direct replacement and dont need a rebalance when you install them.

Stock bolts are real funny in these motors it seems to me. Some people crank them to 7 grand for years and they live fine, others turn them 6200 and they fail. its pretty hit and miss seems like so I think the upgraded bolts are a great idea...especially while the motor isnt in the truck yet.
