Default best cam swap method

well im doing a cam swap very soon just wondering what you guys think is the best way to hold the lifters up as i pull out the cam

1. russian rullet dont use anything just spin the cam till the lifters stay in the trays

2. pen magnets to hold up the lifters

3. the JPR tools from thunder racing which i heard you can use some 5/16 wooden dowel also

im probably going to use three

They stick up pretty good with the Russian Roulette method.

But I say shell out the $1.50 for the dowels. They allow you to sneeze during the install if you have to.

+1 for the wooden dowels. i slid mine in till they hit the back and sawed off the rest leaving enough to pull them back out and it worked as good as the expensive jpr tool for me.

Just checked the ones in the garage I used - they are 24" each.

I think they stuck out a bit, but they worked great.

Just rotate and go! Thats the way I've done it and never had problems although it might be worth the piece of mind to use the dowels.

Steel dowels cost just slightly more than wood and don't get stuck in the block. Apparently you haven't read the horror stories on the site about what happens when a wooden dowel gets stuck in the block. If you are high mileage I'd shy away from the Russian Roulette method. Actually I shy away from it either way considering the extra cost, time and work if a lifter drops. This method is supposed to be a time saver, but if a lifter drops you'll be wasting plenty of it. I don't like taking those kind of changes. When I feel lucky I play the Powerball not Russian Roulette.

Done all 3 and the dowels by far are the easiest.

If you have a lifter drop on you, you will never forgive yourself for not spending a few extra dollars and minutes.....if you think changing the cam is fun, You will love getting a little bit of the oil pan and gasket

and yes from my understanding the dowel rods go here, see pic
