I'm surprised people are recommending a 224 duration cam. The 225/225 that is in the car already is practically the same thing..

low duration + low lsa + advance = torque :/ I've got the stage 2.5 patriot heads with a 223/223 .636/.636 on 110lsa+2 ready to go for my lq4...should be a torque monster.

Hello boostd4,

Cams above 220 @ .050 intake duration will lose you low-end and affect economy considerably.
If idle to around 6,000 power is needed then you probably might want to look for something below this duration.

Here's a link to a good write-up & example of how good smaller cams are for good low & mid-range.
Donkey-dick cams only out-power them above 5,000rpm, or even higher:-
It includes a chart showing an example of a 226/226 against them so it might be pretty relevant for you.

I would go with a better tune and get some 4.10 gears. The gears will do insane things for your low end torque.

With the TFS 215 head what cam would make very good low end torque?
ofcorse this would be a DD or a street car so i would need a nice idle.
Some one can offer some advice?

I was kind of dissapointed in the low end considering the 5.3L heads supposedly increase C/R (and therefore torque), and definitely dissapointed in the cars ability to hold a good idle. I'm thinking both of these issues might be solved by a cam swap.

I'm looking for a cam that has stock like smooth idle and doesn't lose any low end torque.. in fact, MORE would be better. I'm not revving this thing beyond 6500rpm, and would like the most usable torque I can make.

Thanks!
look into the btr tourqe cam. It shows promising results from 2000 - 6000 rpm. Supposedly 20 extra ft lbs at 2000. Good vacuum and decent idle.

Welcome to the forum Charles.
An extra 20 ft lbs at 2000 ia definitely a nice gain.
Look forward to hearing about your plans and builds in a new thread.

I imagine the original poster picked a cam by now. The OP fi posted in 2009. When accessing LS1Tech by mobile phone its easy to scroll into very old threads without realizing it.

Welcome to LS1Tech!

I've come to realize there's many threads on this forum that end up going nowhere, even new threads. Often times once an OP gets their answer they never come back to explain what it was or how they resolved it in an effort to help others and to give the thread closure.

Definitely.
A follow up from OP would make so many threads helpful and worthwhile for those looking for answers. Unfortunately most people don’t care to update to help others once they figure out their issues.
And that’s how we get do many similar threads that end up nowhere.
