by the way, who do you think GM, honda,etc.. send their engines to get warranty work done when a sleeve cracks?

Monkey MTI has it's own machine shop for doing stuff like this.

The tolerances based on what's on LA website are very tight and it has to be done right. If the machine shop lacking climate control to keep the temp the same...I'd get worried. If the machine shop doesn't have a very high quailty boring machine I'd skip them. If the machine shop can't tell you waht the leak down on other sleeved motors they did is, I'd skip them. I have contacts that have done this before and it's tedious to do and do right. I've emailed my friend to see what he thinks about doing a Big Bore on my LS6 block with these sleeves...I post what I find out.

With that said...Monkey is right...there are quailty people with the right tools that can do this as good as any of the big names.

I ordered a set of sleeves today.

The guy im taking my stuff to does nothing but race motors. Mainly nascar/busch/dirt track/winston west, prostock, drag race motors.

Alot of big inch aluminum bigblock & small block stuff with technology and 100k price tags on motors.....

He is confident he can do the ls1 sleeve no different than any other aluminum sleeve he does. And he stands behind his work.

i will let you guys know how it turns out.

ALSO!, I think im going to go 4.100 bore, will that seem like plenty of wall thickness for a big nitrous 427??

The max the LA Sleeves go is 4.155....

Aidan, i think it will be smart to go with a bore smaller than 4.125. i know i will.

Black Bird, i know MTI has a machine shop, what i was trying to say i do you think they do more machine work than Joe Blow's Machine shop down the street?all the issuses you stated about tolerances are not only specific to LS1s, but to other machine work as well.the machine shop i am going to has the latest equipment, which is comforting. i too will take that chance Aidan. i wont go bigger than a 4.1 bore though. i figure if this shop can build engines for outboard racing, fix sleeves for a local honda shop, and have a warranty on their work, what else can i ask for.

Adian,

Please PM/email me for what you could get me a set of sleeves for my block. I have both an LS1 and LS6. I'd like to do the LS6. I need to talk with my friend about the labor to make sure I can squeeze this in my budget.

I'm chicken on spraying one of these motors. I'd go 4.060 if I was going to spray and 4.1 NA. Seems like the 4.1 did very well all in all.

Monkey,

I follow what your saying my friend that does Nascar, Busch stuff pretty much says the samething about sleeving motors.

LOL sounds like we're all pretty much in the same boat on this one!

I dropped sleeves off at my local race machine shop today....he has a full CNC machine setup that he going to setup with....the cnc machine will eliminate problems of changing tolerances or any slop in precisness....

The LA sleeves measure .080 wall @ 4.100 bore. They come in that bore so im gong to leave them at that....

Hes going to install them this week and im going to throw my setup back together as a 427....

Is anyone interested in putting together a 427/388 through me (my shop) & my engine builder as a 2nd tester of this low-cost resleeve setup??

Total we can throw together a resleeved 382/388 shortblock for around $2000? message me...i wanna get the ball rolling

Good luck.

I pretty much would only tell a friend to get a resleeved motor from a shop that will warranty it.

I see you point on that one! Only way I'll consider is if my friends that sleeve Nascar/Busch race stuff all the time do the sleeving.
