Default stroke or not to stroke

alright i have a 2002 ws6 6sp 64,000 miles and the number 7 rod bearing is spun, have the engine pulled gonna remove the oil pan tom. and take a peek at the crank to see if it's still good, check compression is avg of 196 psi before engine was pulled, these are my options basicly a budget build and least amount of money in the bottom end just doing pistons and rods for stock bore or maybe .010 over and get good heads and cam, headers, or go ahead and wait alil while longer and go all out with the 383 forged stroker, give me some pros and cons or maybe even your setup and weather you like it or would you have gone a different route,

thanks in advanced

I say .10 over, forged everything (atleast rods and pistons), and spray the **** out of it.

I would buy one of the new LS6 crates available for under $2800 from SDPC.

Like the song says............stroke is the word......... Not really that much more for what you get. You will just want better heads to feed it though......

if you reuse the stock heads and cam on the stroker it will make a good truck motor (lots of torque, not lots of hp). But if you're willing to do either stock ported or aftermarket heads and a new cam a stroker is the way to go.

If you're happy with your current power level, go with the forged rods and crank and spray away or save up for a procharger and get some truck heads.

Another cheap way to go instead of the LS6 crate motor is the forged 370 from TSP (or any other sponsor). Right now they're selling for $2,999.00, that way you get a couple extra cubes and you can still spray if you want to.

If I were you I'd look at the ls6 crate engines from SDPC if your on a budget. You listed no goal as to what you want to do. IMO a 383 thats ready to go for 3800 isn't a bad deal either if it has good parts.

FWIW, if your going to buy a rotating assembly then you may as well buy a block and do a 408. Shop around, many of the site sponsors offer good short block strokers for a good price.

What are you going to use the car for, DD, Street, Strip....

If you just forge you 347, you can spray the **** out of it.
Heads, cam and bolt ons will get you 450whp/410tq give or take, on motor, then you could spray it to get the 600/600

If you don't have the money, do the FULL bottom end, and a cam, worry about the heads later. Your in Florida, your car will love it.

car will be dd and see track time, not looking to go extreme, just want a healthy 500 to the wheels n/a thats why i was thinking the displacement would be a major help getting there without going all out with a cam, and i was thinking about prc heads and a tsp cam not sure which cam or heads but i was gonna call em and tell them my goals see what they suggest,

After looking into quite a few options including the HKE built 383 that Blancco has for sale, I have decided for budget purposes to build a forged 383!!! I have a 4" crank from a buddy, so that expense is covered. With parts and machine work it should come in just under 2500.00. That is getting the parts at quite a discount. I will probably have to buy a different cam to match the cubes, but then I will sell the one I have to re-coup the loss. If you are on a budget as I, you could just forge the bottom end. Or check the 4-sale section. there is a guy selling a Forged 347 for about 2500.00 fight now.

I have done to different builds. One being a 408 Stroker and One being a Forged 347.

I would want you to know that strokers are expensive and in my 408 build I had oveer 4200 in the short block assembled with cam and pushrods, then probabley put another 2000 or more in it with Fast Intake, Lifters, Gasket Kit, Injectors, etc. Compression 11.5 to 1.
HP N/A was 530 TRQ 479 Then I 150 Shot was added. and it was in the 650 Range.

I then decided I wanted a supercharger, I built my Forged 347 for about 3 Thousand. And I now had a Supercharged 347 off the bottle putting down 630 hp on a Street Tune. I thought to my self, why do I need a stroker??? I can make just as much HP with a 347 and a Supercharger as my 408 did on the bottle. I saved about 3 dollars and had a faster car.

Dont get me wrong I like both builds. But people are telling you to waste your money on a stroker and you dont need to do it. I put down 770 on a 150 Shotwith my 347 S/C w/ Nitrous. That is enough HP for about anyone on here to enjoy at the track.

The best advice is listen to people who have already done this. 347's make insane power and will save you a lot of money. There are atleast 5 people in my own state I know putting over 700 RWHP down on Forged 347 S/C Applications. Some even in the 800 hp.

Look at the Fquick or the Sig or PM me and I will give you build sheets on both of the engines and there price sheets and power they put down.

347 forged, 150 shot, before I decided to build my 402. I made around 420 to the wheels on motor.
O and stock heads.

Sell your motor as-is and pick up a 6.0 Truck shortblock for cheap.

For the money you would spend on a 4" crank to make a 383, you could find a set of nice used heads.

A 6.0 truck motor is a 4" bore, which will breath better than the 3.9" LS1 once you get decent heads.

Whats the cost of that s/c setup and fuel system?
You can make great power with FI, but don't forget to add that in when your comparing costs.

If you want to make 500hp to wheels N/A the easiest way would be to build a stroker. This is especially since you want it to be your daily driver and you're not looking at buying a good set of aftermarket (TFS, AFR, etc.) heads. Personally, I think your best bet would be to spend a little more on the heads and get a custom cam for the build. This will help ensure you meet your goal.

A 4" bore motor such as the 6.0 truck motor, is going to make 500rwhp just as easy as a smaller bore 383. Bore makes more of a difference than cubic inches in this case.

500 N/A on a forged 347 will be pushing it. You'll need the best of everything; hand ported heads, kooks headers, custom exhaust, custom cam, electric water pump, ud pulley, etc.....

If you want 500 n/a go with the stroker. If you plan on going FI than the 347 will be fine but then the cost of the FI is going to add up anyway.
