Default Cam to Maximize midrange area under HP curve

Hi fellas,

I am new to this board (but have done lots of reading) and just bought a 2000 C5, so now it's time to start the modding .

I have tried the search but it only brings back recent posts, not many of which apply to my goals. I am looking at maximizing the area under the TQ (and thus HP) curve from 2500 rpm to 5000 rpm. I want to shift this cam at 6200 rpm with peak HP at approx 6000 rpm. I will be running stock LS1 heads for now, and moving up to ported 6.0L low compression heads when I do the blower.

The reasons for my power band desires are as follows:

1. This will be an autoX car where midrange is key. I would like to see 380 rwtq as early as possible, and hopefully peak near 400 rwtq somewhere around 4k rpm.

2. I will later on be running a blower which will take care of filling in the top end, but since centrifugal blowers are weak down low, I want this cam to compensate with a big low end.

3. I think many of the bigger sticks being sold result in HP peaks too high for stock bottom end applications to safely spin too (6500 rpm is my absolute limit).

I am thinking of a cam something like this:

Intake duration: 218-220
Exhaust duration: 222-224
lift: .560-.580
LSA: 115 or 116
Advance: 4*
aggresive ramps - i.e. XE or XE-R lobes

I do not care about factors like lope, idle, fuel economy, emissions, or even valvetrain wear - all I care about is maximizing the low end and midrange.

Does anyone have experience with cams in this range? I would love to see dyno sheets/results. I would also love to hear people chime in with cam theory and how it relates to my goals.

Thanks!

218/226 on a 115lsa should do the trick...

Comp Cams makes some split pattern cams in that range, or they will make you a custom grind for no extra charge. But if you'll ever be putting headers on it, go with a single pattern cam like the TR220 114. A lot of people have gotten excellent results with that cam, just ask Gomer for example! Or even better, let it rev a little higher and get a TR224 114, it has a great low end, mid range and high end! This cam makes power all the way up the curve.

I ran the TR220 112lsa for a while on stock heads and stage II 5.3 heads. It made 380rwhp with stock heads and 416rwhp 392rwtq on the 5.3 heads.. all on stock programming. It is REALLY hard to beat the TR220 or TR224 for good midrange without sacrificing anything down low.

I will be doing some bolt-ons that make sense, especially headers and an electric WP. I will also obviously upgrade the valvetrain.

So people like the TR224, however i have never been one to follow the crowd and I am willing to take risks to tweak the setup. I wil be sure to report back to the forum with the dyno AND track results.

So, would going with a 220/224 instead of the 224/224 increase low end? Would shifting to a 115 or 116 LSA increase low end? I would say yes given the cam theory I have read - but would like to hear from someone who has experience. I realize top end will be sacrificed, but that is where the D1SC comes into play.

Thnks for the help thus far guys!

go ask the FI guys what cams they run, that'll be your best bet to get experience from the guys who are running blowers. im not sure there theres a particular off the shelf cam they use. i'd go with a custom grind in your situation.
