Default 1998 Trans am ---- Ls6?

i came across a brand new w/warranty ls6 turn key for 3g's . . . i also came across a local car that has everything less engine for a decnet price. . . . . . . is this a good idea or a hassel? what kind of results should i expect with the new ls6 and bolt-ons, (lid, lt's, good clutch, and a tune?) i think i can do the whole thing w/o paying for labor a total of about 8g's invested. The car is a 6speed car with some suspention goodies and lower miles. your input positive or negative is welcome and appreciated! Thanx!

I have a 98 with an ls6 based motor in it. There is no difference in how things hook up other than the pcv system. The crate engine will be a great platform to start your modding. It will already have good compression, heads, intake, and lightweight valvetrain. I say go for it! You will need an fbody maf or properly calibrated 85mm maf and throttle body. Plus an f body oil pan and accessory brackets. I'm not sure what all is included in the crate and with the car you are thinking of getting.

Just a thought, but for the $8g's and the work you personally would have to put into it....would it be worth it? That's for you to decide. Take a look in the vehicles for sale section to find out, and also check local autotrader/craigslist. There have been quite a few cars that are even cam'ed with about 400rwhp going for around $8g's. Also, '98's have a different fuel tank/pump setup and a computer that's not as good as the '99-up. Granted, if you got a good deal on a '98 (like I did on mine) you could over look things like that. But $8g's plus some labor might not make it worth it to you when you add in the bolt ons and clutch you want to do.....it will be well over the $10k mark.

Mine is 98 and I had no problem changing the fuel pump even if its different. Plus my pcm is getting no problem getting tune by TTP.

true about the 8g; you could get another car already cammed, but maybe this car wont be perfect for 8K.. so you might need to go around other stuff..You always get what you pay for.

Check your options...L92 heads make good power for cheap. You could build a cheap 370ci too. Total cost might same and get you 430rwhp+ easy with good torque.

Or cam the LS6 before putting in the car.

all true!, however the bolt-ons already come with the car so the 8k i was talking about would be total invested even adding on about 700 for just in case funds. . . . .

I sold my old 98 motor that had a spun rod bearing for 2,000.

3,000 for a turn key W/warranty is a deal I wouldn't pass up if funds allowed. As for building a cheap 370.. A ROTATING ASSEMBLY alone will run you 4.5-5K easy with a warranty, And thats just the start..

no^^ a SB iron 427 is going for 3500$ linky; https://ls1tech.com/forums/new-produ...3499-99-a.html plus the cam 400$ at most brand new no deal.
So add a pair of L92 heads and intake kit/injectors/misc for less than 2000$ and youre still under 6K with a badass setup for cheap as long as you install your self some parts and have the old accessories from your car. Youll need a bunch of gaskets too and timing chain gears...what else, injectors and tune..it adds up quickly, I admit.

Or cheapest you keep your old heads with a port job/LS6 intake and you have a lot of room to grow along the way to your final goals.

3K is cheap for LS6.

..and I bought a used forged SB 347 for 1500$ on ebay.

If you got the time and $$ go for it.

I have a 98 Firebird that came with a v6 and converted it over to a 98 with a LS1.

I too got a awsome deal on the motor/trans PCM and al the stuff I needed, and it was fun to me, but I'm a very sick boy.
