strange noise....help please

strange noise....help please I have a strange clunking/knocking sound comming from the engine compartment. I have crawled all over the car with a mechanics stesiscope (sp?) and thought it was comming from the bell housing. I pulled the trans checked the clutch and other parts, replaced the slave, put it together and its still there.
Here are the symptoms:
NO knock detected on auto tap.
no noise below 2000 rpm.
If cruising around 2000, you hear a clunking/knocking sound...let off the gas and it goes away, give it a little gas and it goes away.
If I rev the motor while listening over the engine compartment, I can hear the noise, but if you put the scope on the valve covers and other parts of the block, you don't hear anything other than just smooth running.
I was possibly thinking it was something with the belt tensioner or inside with the timing chain?????
The runs like an animal, so I am not sure what it could be. I would like to get some possible ideas prior to taking stuff appart.
