Can the crankshaft be saved?
A friend was doing an underdrive pulley swap on his truck and had the pulley bolt break off inside the crank, used an easy out to pull out the bolt but now has to rethread the inside of the crank. What size would it be? I've never heard of something like this, i thought it only happened with head studs

I would drill it and tap it one size bigger. Sounds like you should make friends with a guy at a machine shop and offer him 50 bucks to come to ýour house and do it after work.

Was the car ever worked on before in this area? A lot of guys use the wrong procedure and mess up the threads. Some find out right away and some after the next removal.
That aside, what condition are the threads now? Are they completely wiped out or are they still in there? I wouldn't use a tap, but rather a thread chaser which doesn't remove material from the threads. This is repairable in the car, the method depends on the current condition of the threads.

If threads are there use them and loctite. Or call it a loss and by a new crank. Just sold mine used for 125 shipped in great condition. If you tap if yourself and the angle is off a bit. Bet the balancer will not be 100% trued and you will weeble wobble. Take to machine shop if anything, buy a new crank, or use threads if still there and locktite.

I have had a helicoil in an old 6223 crank for about 20 years with no issues. Should have machine shop do the work to get it right but these things work great when applied correctly. If you oversize, will have issues getting correct balancer bolt.
