Question Normal Oil Pressure For a Cammed LS1?

I just changed the oil on my 2001 WS6. It's cammed with a Torquer V2, and has full exhaust and bolt ons.

What I'm trying to figure out is what the normal oil pressure for it should be?

Before I changed the oil today, it would sit idling at about 40 after a good warm up. But now it sits at about 45-48.

Could it be that I used a real thick oil? They told me to use thicker oil since it's cammed. I used some Valvoline racing oil, forgot what it's called, but it was 20W/50.

Any info would be appreciated.

20w50 would be why you have an increase in pressure. i'm not sure who told you to run a thicker oil because your cammed but i would do a little research. unless you have a built motor with clearances that dictate a thicker oil i would stick with a quality 30 or 40 weight

If you have a stock rotating assembly I'd run across the room and kick in the nuts who ever told you to run that oil weight. The stock rotating assembly is 10W30 and I would do 5W30 at best anything above your going to hurt something. Unless your running a combination of an HO+HV oil pump (Melling) with the 10W30 your going to run a little higher oil pressure.

I'm even scared to get on it a bit because when I'm at about 1/2 to 3/4s throttle it shoots up to about 70. Is that normal???

Uh... you should really change it back to 5(or 10)w30, you're likely to break something.

Race oil = Race car.

i really don't see you breaking anything from a 50 weight oil. it probably isn't good in the long run and definitely isn't good when the car is cold but i wouldn't worry about it blowing anything up. i would switch back to a 30 or 40 weight but i wouldn't hesitate to drive the car either

I would run 10w30, but I wouldn't be to worried if its going up to 70psi, at 2k or higher. Do you have a stock oil pump?

Yes. It almost reaches 80 PSI at full throttle.

What's normal PSI for cammed LS1s at idle and full throttle? Anyone know?

All engines are different with different mileage so I don't know if there is a standard for oil pressure.

I have a ported LS6 Oil pump and @ idle my pressure is usually 50-55 HOT, during cold start Idle it reaches 60-70 easy and @ WOT it wouldn't surprise me if it's at 80 but honestly i never paid attention while at wot.

According to the manual

@1000 Rpm 6psi minimum
@2000 Rpm 18psi minimum
@4000 Rpm 24psi Minimum

your fine. nothing is going to break lol!. I would switch down to a regular weight oil. I ran 20w 50 in my 383 lt1 car, but it was built for that oil. All you are doing is leaving power on the table by running that thick oil. a cammed ls1 oil psi should be no different than stock, unless the oil pump has been modified.

My oil pressure does the same thing at WOT I'm at 80 it's been that way for 2 years.
You should be fine. I do have a ported ls6 pump.
