Default using tons of oil what would you guys do?

Ok i know enough here to be dangerous but i'm looking for suggestions as to what to do. My 2000 Trana Am M6 w/60k miles uses a ton of oil. I"m assuming its bad rings. I use so much it fouls my spark plugs up right away. My exhaust tips have oil all over the place. I just put 243 heads and a custom grind cam 232/236 cam in last winter. I do'nt need anything hard core in this thing but is it worth while to bore it out w/new bearings and all or just have new rings put in? shoudl i get new pistons and stuff as well or what do you suggest with 60k miles??? I go to the track about 3 times a year and it does get driven hard on the street. It dynoed at 395 hp but the tuner at rapid thought with that cam and all my mods it should have been better numbers. looking for suggestions Thanks

Bad rings at 60,000....thats odd.

I'd say your valve seals are bad. I know the heads are 1 year old, but the valve seals can still be bad. Thats how raw oil gets on the spark plug tips. Not really by bad rings.

Other way alot of oil can go through the engine...stuck open PCV valve.

If you cruise steady at say 60mph....and then hammer the pedal to the floor.....do you make a cloud of bluish/white smoke? Thats bad valve seals.

I just can't believe its valve seals. This problem was going on before my H/C swap and then I put new seals in and its still a problem. I also put on the LS6 valley cover before the H/C swap cause it was so bad. I did have a catch can but it didn't get to much i really thought it was the rings.

pull oil cap off and rev the engine steady to 2500 and see how much blowby you see.

its a kit you buy, what it does is pressureize each cylinder and you can diagnoise where the air is going out the cylinder, see how much blow by you have when the oil cap opens. i really dont think rings can be bad that early if the car was taken care of

Did you pull the intake off and check the runners for oil ? Do the simpler things first. Oil on the TB blade?

It means you are getting reversion. That tube that goes from the passenger side valve cover the to tb is the culprit. At hi rpm is sucks oil instead of flowing fresh air in.

They make dual catch can units for it, there is a thread here somewhere talking all about it.

whoa whoa That is what my tuner said is that I had an oil reversion problem. I thought that just meant the oil is going past my rings. I had oil on my intake runners. what will a dual catch can do? I had a Revxtreme catch can but it was just 1 can. Will oil reversion cause a loss of power and is there a thread to fix this?????? Please HELP!!!

Reversion just means the flow is getting reversed in this case. But its good news for you! It can be fixed and you dont need rings or a leak down test.

I'll look for the thread and post it here. Yes suck enough oil in through the intake and it will effect power.

If you have ported heads you also may need to seal the rocker bolts in the intake runners if they poke through.

Perfect I want to do this. I saw on that thread that there is a dual catch can routing. between the valley cover the Throttle body also the manifold and the passenger side valve cover. Please recommend the best setup for me to go with. My passenger side valve cover is capped off that is what i was told to do will I need to uncap that and go with a dual setup I guess? Woudl i need vented or non vented systems. Let me know thanks for the help if this fixes this problem i don't care about money i just want the best setup.

My setup is LS1 engine block with LS6 valley cover. 243 heads ported stock throttle body. I also have an LS6 intake.

now are those good catch cans because i know some catch cans are worthless. It has to do with the inside of the can from what I understand. Also how comes I was told to cap the nipple on the valve covers before?

Where can I buy good cans. Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

It should fix the issue, RevXtreme makes a good can, I think those others are good but not sure. I know it says so in that thread.. it's long but go through it and you'll find all the info you need.

Unfortueatly its just masking the trouble. The intake side of the PCV system is supposed to flow back at WOT. Its designed that way to relive crankcase pressure. For sme reason you have too much.
