Default Cam Choice (down to two)

For a bolt on non stall car
Im between these two cams

http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca...csid=1087&sb=2

http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca...csid=1089&sb=2

Anyone have an opinion to which one would be better for a DD looking for some nice power?

Im leaning toward the 218/220

thanks guys

Smaller cams are fine, but personally I would do the 220/224 or the 'quintessential' 224/224..

You will get a gain over stock with any of them. Just depends on your overall subjectivity of HP vs DD. I have ran a 220/220 114. Nice 'smaller' cam..Kinda fell off in power fairly rapidly after 6200 Rpm's..but drivable and better than stock.

Good luck.

I love my TR224. I have a 116 lsa to keep the stock like idle. Otherwise i'd go lower if I didn't want stock drive ability. It feels stock till 3k then it pulls like a mother. And still get at least 28 mpg, even with the 4.10 gears!

whats a good 224 224 cam to look into?
what valve lift and lsa?

pretty much i dont really care about gas mileage or emissions but id like a car i can drive everyday, i want a good bit of power on this thing without risking breaking the bottom end, upgrading the bottom end or stalling it

Anytime i come into a small cam thread, i say the same thing. why not go just a bit bigger? i recommned something like the 228R that tsp offers. something along those lines is gives a much better gain in HP and a good low end than those small cams you listed. those really arent worth the trouble of going through all the work IMO. itll pull hard, very good driveability, tune fine, wont idle hard, and you wont sacrafice a lot of MPG. theres been plenty of people that have pulled off 400's to the wheels with it. if youre gonna do some internal work, do it once so you wont be disappointed later on

and as always, custom grinds are always a good choice.

Agreed....

New Era Performance has a sweet 220*-224* grind that fits the criteria perfectly....

With stock heads you are fine with any lift between .550-.581.

Nothing wrong with the Comp Cam 220/224. It might fall off its peak HP a little sooner than the 224/224. The 224 seems to just hit the 'sweet spot' as far as a good range of HP/TQ.

I think any of the sponsors including some who have responded here could probably get you a good package. You are just talking a difference of 5-10 HP and a few degrees of overlap difference with each selection.

And if a year or two down the line you go bigger..I agree 228 cams do not give up that much low end, but are a step up..

Ed's got a nice line-up of cams..Good luck in your search. Let us know how that 2010 Camaro SS work out!

I wouldnt swap cam at all if planning to get a 10' soon! but I would go 220-224, or 224-224 too.

I almost have never heard anybody 'bad-mouth' the TR224. I believe the Comp 224 is on a XE-R lobe with a little more lift.

Check with the sponsor(s)..I think you can get your own cam card with the TR224 (or others) and if you want something slightly different..I.E. 222/224 or 222/226 if you still want a split, they can order you a custom grind for just a few dollars more.

If you want just my opinion based on your next car purchase, and want to keep it simple..I will reiterate, I never really hear anybody say anything bad about the TR224 for overall performance and driveability. But, it is just one opinion..so keep an open mind. There is no 'magic cam'..

your car will go faster with the stall while getting nearly the same gas mileage and having perfect drivability. save the big bucks from a cam swap and buy a used 3600 converter.

or if you REALLY cannot stand the stall, go for a 224/224 114

Even without a stall Im sure your car could still handle the 228R, and once you save up for and get the stall, you'll probably regret not going bigger than what you listed. Just my 2 cents

I recently spoke to a fellow WS6 owner with a 228R in his A4 (w/ the stock converter). He said the car constantly wanted to push through the brakes at idle. Like mentioned above, I've heard the biggest you generally would want to go with the stock converter would be the 224.

I had a 228/222 with a 115 and it drove like stock around town and on the dyno it made 378 to the wheels with a stock ls1 intake manifold.

should have mentioned that before. if you still want a cam, dont go bigger than a 224 if you dont want a new converter as well, but i say just stick that money in your pocket and use it for mods on the '10 SS!

You are not going to risk hurting the bottom end with any cam only set up, unless you have PTV issues, or you are spinning it really high.

No cam only car will ever make enough power to risk the bottom end period. It just boils down to clearance, and rpm.
