Default Shavings in my oil still

Changed my oil again, last time I changed it I had alot of shavings on my drainplug, and decided I'd put a couple thousand miles on it and check again and it's still doing it. Looks like I have a rod or main bearing going out. The shavings are a dark silver color. Can't decide whether to just replace the bearings or go lq4 route. I don't have alot of money right now. The car isn't knocking or anything at all. How difficult is it to replace the bearings? The motor has to be removed right? Next step for me is to pull the oil pan and see If I can see anything amiss.

A new motor can do it for months...mine did. Then it never did it again.

How old is your motor?

Motor has 83k miles. The cam is only about 10-20k miles old. I just thought if bearings were wearing out we'd hear it knocking. There's no weird noises coming from the motor at all.

bearing material won't stick to the magnet so forget that. It probably cam - lifter related. Mine always has something stuck to the magnet, usually a very dark looking pasty material.

Same here, but only a few times. Does the motor run ok? How's your oil pressure?

Oil pressure is good, never drops below 30 at hot idle. Normally hovers around 40-45 at idle. Yeah it sounds like we have the same thing, good to know it's not a bearing issue. The car runs rough sometimes but that's a tune issue

If it is easy for you, I would drop the pan to check it all just in case.

Well if its just the black pasty crap on the magnet forget about because i seen it on my magnets for over 150 thous miles./ must be normal wear for the LS1 prolly why they added that magnet.

Damn, I never had dark colored metal shavings.

When my engine was new for about the first 4 months I always found metal shavings on my oil drain plug. But they were pure bright silver in color and it was such tiny particles the best way to describe it is powdery past. You touch it and it looks like silver paint on your finger.

After those 4 months it never showed up again.

What the hell can dark colored shavings be?

Send in an oil sample to blackstone labs for a UOA and that may very well tell if and what problem you may have.....

Mine always BOTH cars LS1 engines have a black metalic pasty material on the magnet. If i wipe it off its not acually fillings but like a paste????? I always guessed it was the moly in the engine oil mixed with some iron and steel super fine particles. I had it at EVERY oil change on both cars OVER 150k miles so its got to be something normal. On the 99 it seemed to be less as the miles got higher. The 02 only has 43k on it and the tip of the magnet is covered at every oil change.

It really worried me on the 99 but after about 50k miles without any trouble i just forgot about.

My car's had the paste and metal shavings for 6 or 7 years now. I quit worrying about it.
