I just read in GM High Tech, Jan 2010 page 57,pic 24, in an artical "Bookin By The Book, part 4", early style blocks use unequal-lenght M11 bolt style as do all LS blocks cast prior to 2004.

Just another bit of info that goes along with that, if it's an early block (pre-04 sounds right) you'll have different length studs/bolts and early cam bearings. After which obviously you get newer cam bearings and all the M11 bolts will be the same length. I beileive this was a couple of the differences when GM stated calling them the gen 4. Also would have meant knock sensors not in the valley, and a cam sensor on front of the block.

arp lists the years of the difference on their website. just go look.
