might be a hassle but like anything matching the cylinder combustion character will help the engine to run better. The more even the cylinders are matched the better its going to perform. From timing to fuel the better the cylinder are alike the better the computer can demand power from the engine.

I always do it. Why make mods to a car if you're not gonna follow through w/ every aspect? Also, why would someone not want the most effecient combustion possible? If you decide to do it, index a little more toward the intake valve side.

old school hotrodding trick, everything I have ever read has lead that it is a good idea but there has never been any proven increases. Anyone who disputes this, I'm not lookin to argue, post PROVEN results, and I will change my opinion on this.

I do it, usually takes 16 plugs to get 8 that match up for me but the last time I lucked out and had 8 that were right on. I only do this because I grew up this way and I do believe in reading plugs. I think I get a better read, I also like to make the cylinders as even as possible. As long as the ground is up and not facing the piston that is what is important to me.

Never wasted the time in the 10 years I've been building engines, and never once had a problem making power because of it.

Don't waste your time. Lots of old small block tricks do not work or do very very little on LS motors.

I just read a short experiment http://dodgeram.org/tech/gas/spark_p...0_indexing.htm that says the ground should face away from the quench pad. It seems like, it would be a cheap improvement...even if it was only 5hp.

The only reason people usually indexed plugs is b/c the dome on the piston would push the electrode shut.

We have to do this on our 565 b/c the clearance is so tight between the piston dome and cylinder head.

Is it worth doing? Sure, if you have a few hours/$$$ to waste for a couple boxes of plugs or indexing washers to get .25 HP.

Bottom line, I would do it unless your pushing 700+HP.

My opinion.

Buy indexing washers from a sponsor like Summit Racing. No need to buy extra plugs. The washers will allow you to get any plug in the correct rotation, facing the desired area. You want the elbow side (back side) of the ground strap to face away from the combustion chamber. The open area between the electrode & ground strap face the combustion chamber; prefferably a little more toward the intake valve side.

Easy way of looking at it, it will help before it hurts your performance so just do it.

I was thinking about the posting the exact same thread the other night.

I never knew if it actually made any difference or not.

If it would work on a SBC why wouldn't it work on a LS1?

It should work on the LSx motors but they are more efficient than the SBC so it may not be as noticeable.

Not worth doing unless, as stated above, is needed to clearance the dome from closing the ground strap.

It's one of those "every last little bit" mods. I don't do it but can't see where it would hurt.
