Question Will an LS1 Idle without the LID on? (safely!)

My car is garaged and currently without a lid as it was sent out for paint work. I was wondering if it will harm it in any way to start it up and let it idle so I can let the engine warm for an oil change? Not too concerned about CES light either, just wondering if their will be any harm done letting it idle without a lid?

PLMK, thanks!

as long as nothing big gets sucked up, shouldn't do any harm. If you're that worried about, lean the filter in front in the intake until it warms up. This is assuming you still have your inlet piping, MAF, etc.

My dad always told me to let an engine warm to make it easier to get the filter and plug out, but my logic is that if you let it warm up, it'll circulate the dirty oil and you won't get as much out of the engine as if you let it sit overnight. It IS harder to get the filter and plug off, but it shouldn't be on that tight anyway, especially if you change your own oil every time and you don't torque it to 200 ft-lbs like jiffy lube does.

It is MUCH better to warm the engine up before an oil change, you will thin the oil out and it'll pour out much faster and you'll get more of the dirty oil out.

I second that. I always drive to get my oil and new filter, then do the oil change when I get back (wearing mechanics gloves of course) With the oil thinner, more of it runs out of the lines and from the walls of the pan and such, letting more oil come out.

As for the original post, youll get an SES light Im sure, but just make sure it doesnt suck anything up. Running it for that short of a time shouldnt do any damage.

I heard that you were supposed to let it warm before changing it, so when I first bought the car I checked the owner's book, and what do you know, it says to do it when warm.

tried it once on an explorer to spray carb cleaner into the throttle body and it was difficult to keep it running...but that a ford...chevy should be fine without the lid for awhile.

change your oil when its hot, it flows quicker, who wants to wait around for cold oil to run out? also if you want to clean your motor really good! drain the oil, fill it back up with diesel and run for 5 min, drain the diesel and change the filter, finally fill it back up with oil of choice.

Unless you can't prove if the prev owner did any maintenance, why would you want to chance your engine with that method given that most oil today is superior in cleaning aspects as compared to back in the day?

Which reminds me, when I was young I worked a stint in a radiator shop and across the street was a transmission shop, the owner drove a Dodge dart w/ a slant 6 engine, he swore by running his engine with ATF oil inside, he claimed he got 300k miles out of all of his cars....he did like the gonja too

Yes, drain the oil when it's hot - unless you have all day to wait for that cold syrup to bloop out of the pan.

Only harm would be running it in dusty conditions. I'm sure you wouldn't do that.

Also, if the MAF is still hooked to the connector but not to the TB, it will stall. You'll need a little help with the throttle to keep it alive.
