Default Intermittent tempreature spike...?

I am stumped. My cammed 02 has run perfectly since the cam and spring swap and tune. The car is only driven about 4 days a week. One day last week I noticed the check gauges light on and the temp was reading close to 250! I was coasting in neutral when I saw it and within seconds (literally before I could pull over) the temp returned to the mod point...210 and it didn't spike again. Well, this morning on the way to work in stop and go traffic is did the same thing 2-3 times at varying engine rpm and speed. It would run normal then spike to about 250 for 20-30 seconds then return to normal. Could this be a water pump starting to go out? Maybe a bad t-stat? Bad relay for the low temp fan?

Thanks.

To add to this...the cam swap was done back in June and now temps are cooler than they have been in Houston since the swap...

did you properly "burp" the system?
Is fluid leaking from the w-pump weep hole?
Does your temp come down fast after it rises? (stuck t-stat closed position)
Are the fans coming on properly?

T-stats are cheap, and easy to replace. I would start there if the fans are working properly.

Sounds like a T-stat starting to get sticky......

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking t-stat, but wasn't sure.

To answer the questions...

Yes, burped correctly....4 months ago and had no cooling problems throughout the summer.

No fluid from weep hole and no fluid loss.

As stated, the temp drops quickly after is spikes.

Atleast one of the times it did this the car was going over 35 mph, which I think would rule out a fan problem. I will verify that they are coming on properly, though.

T-stats are cheap, so I will start there.

Thanks!
