Default Can you replace main bolts while the motors together?

Im having to drop my oil pan outta my car here this spring. I have a tubular k-member and the trans will be out. I was thinking while i had it off to changed the main bolts. Is it as simple as just taking the bolts out and putting the studs in? Of course in order, with moly lube, ect ect.

simple answer...no.

when you change the main bolts to studs, it must be align honed. the clamping force changes and will "oval" the main bores. they need to be re trued.

so basically, if you want to put main studs in, the engine has to come totally apart.

What you can do is change to ARP bolts not studs the bolts don't distort the main bore, as where it was stated thee studs apply a much higher clamping force due to the fine thread.

It's difficult to find a good reason to do this. The kinds of power upgrades that would expose the mainbolts as a failure point are well beyond the limits of the cast pistons, so unless you're replacing them you aren't accomplishing anything useful by just replacing the main bolts.

+1

You would do more harm than good by going with studs. I wouldn't even switch to ARP bolts (if they even make them).
